Great stuff in this thread.

The thing about cost is not negligible. The wonderfully detailed buildings at Tabletop World cost upwards of 30, 50 or 100 euros each - without paint, of course. My scratchbuilt half-timbered houses cost next to nothing, just a few bucks for bags of balsa pieces, and then scavenged materials like bank calendar cardstock and old boxes of medicine for thinner stock. You can see some of my work in this thread.

Sure, it takes a lot of time. Skill comes along in the building of it, practice makes perfect (or close enough).

So I may eventually splurge and order a dozen Tabletop World masterpieces. Or not. But the cost calculation rarely comes into it.

If it was the same quality and same thing, I'd buy it...and probably spend my time making other terrain or painting minis...not sure if it would actually put any kind of dent in my to do pile, but it, probably, wouldn't make it worse

Myself if the cost was equal, I would build. I enjoy not just the building of terrain but the whole process, Planning, drawing it out on paper, getting the materials, the building of it, and finishing it with painting and the finial touches. For myself I find it relaxing and my mind not thinking of the day's events.

I just discovered sculpting and now I have a whole list of figures I would like to do. Again the whole process likrmthe terrain building is relaxing for me.

Plus I like to make the stuff that I am sure I may not be able to buy commercially that fits in to my different worlds to which they fit in. I like 15mm scale and there is just not enough terrain in scale for my liking, Sci-fi, Pirates, Pulp, Zombies and Post Apocalyptic.

Well there's my two cents.  :)
