What paint/primer  brands/colors does everyone like for representing British khaki uniforms From 1880-1900?

There are all sorts of combinations that one could use. Here's one that I still have the recipe written down used some for Second Anglo Afghan War Brits but the recipe could easily be modified to adjust for variation.

I used on following these chaps:

First three Stages are all AK AK Brush and Airbrush (Water based Acrylic)-
1/ Basecoat of AK Brush and Airbrush (Water based Acrylic)- WWI British Khaki Brown Base- AK4042
2/ Mix of WWI B. K. B. B.- AK4042 with AK Brush and Airbrush WWI British Uniform Light
3/ WWI British Uniform Light
Then a mix of AK Brush and Airbrush (Water based Acrylic) and Vallejo Pale Sand- small amounts of Pale Sand added to start with and building up as you progress until you arr satisfied with the result.

I used about seven layers up to the final highlights but the recipe could very easily be distilled down to just a few layers over the base coat.

Hope that helps? I've got a good Vallajo Khaki recipe that I have written down in a different note book which I can dig out for you if you like?

I own all three Hargreaves' books and they come very highly recommended. They are up there with Kev Dallimore's Painting guides IMHO.

@Atheling

It does help, thank you. No need to go to the trouble to dig up all the other painting notes.

Cool, if you need anything else just let me know. As you know Khaki would vary towards a sandy yellow, even pale sandy yellow to greener tones (generally as the BA moved toward WWI).

A with a very pale khaki Done with five pots from the Andrea White Set; Neil's Blue Caps during the Indian Mutiny:

Theoretically khaki uniforms should be easy but it is very complicated. Some trend towards brown, others towards yellow.

I tend to like a slightly grey but otherwise flat Sahara sand color. Pollys old acrylic paints used to make a perfect shade of that. But I also liked a yellow ochre made by Pelikan Plaka casein paints.

I couldnt find the color patch for the Pollys paint but itd be like this and come out something like the 1/35 British 8th Army miniatures in the subsequent link.

Which would come out something like the vehicle in this link:

I suppose the truth is that like ACW "butternut" colored uniforms, the khakis of the British during the colonial era varied a great deal. But, as noted before, this isnt just about fact but also about the symbol of the British Empire in our imaginations.

Very nice Orctrader and a good colour combination.

Looking at your pictures and some from Steve Dean’ collection, the Foundry Rawhide looks like an option.

Have you still got that Vallejo-Foundry conversion chart from the ye olde SDF Mindenbrush?

I had it saved somewhere but I've been through so many laptop incarnations since then.....

Did Steve do one?

The only list I have that Steve did was the one on changing the percentages on the original Foundry batch of paints to allow a better 3 layer effect.

Possibly not Steve..... someone did..... I asked him recently ans he's got no idea where it might be. Given that the SDF was a bit like a brotherhood/sisterhood I'm sure that it's got to be out there somewhere.

Maybe that's what I'm thinking of? If you still have it can you email it to me please?

I'll PM you my email.

Looking down to the bottom of the page where there are related links there is this

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=52993.0

Which suggests Foundry Rawhide and Drab. Looking at the Drab I think it will also work really well.
