Painting up my Full Thrust fleet.
« on: August 01, 2020, 02:28:03 AM »
Hello folks. I’m starting to get serious about painting up my Full Thrust ships, cranking out some more UNSC ships after deciding on a paint scheme.

I have a write up and a short review on my blog here http://www.addictedtolead.net/2020/07/27/unsc-full-thrust-fleet-review-and-photos/

I have this fleet and it needs painting, this is a nice colour scheme. Maybe I will use it, thanks.

Thanks! I had a hard time at first transitioning from 28mm figures to smaller scales. But I think I'm getting a good workflow down for these ships.

Lovely work! How do you find the quality of the sculpts these days, was there much clean up involved? I see the assembly was a bit challenging but I'm more interested in the quality of the moulds these days. I only have so much patience with the needle files these days!  o_o  :P

I painted some fighters and smaller ships for Star Wars Armada and was happy with the results. I got all enthusiastic and tried some Full Thrust models and they turned out badly :'(

I think mine were too busy and my colour choices didn't work. Next time I think I'll try something more along the lines of what you've used, as they look more like how I hoped mine were going to turn out

That's a lovely flotilla you've got there. I really like the new unified scheme too  :D

I bought the full UNSC range about 3 years back and found all the sculpts were fine. I had previously bought the new style ESU fleet and had to cut down almost all the engine cowls and resculpt as they'd ripped the molds. There was none of this issue with the UNSC. Having said that, I did end up using quite a bit of brass rod to build the UNSC ships and had to play around with the mounting to ensure they sat evenly on the stands.

The 'tab and socket' connection points need a a little clean up sometimes, easy enough with a drill especially if you're using brass rod for the larger ships but I got by with an xacto and a file. The mini themselves were great. very little clean up and just normal mold lines. I ordered Crustys, new Kra'vak, pirates, and Civilian ships and I have no complaints. I ordered some old NSL ships to finish a collection and those are showing their age but Jon did warn me. Despite that they turned out good, although they did take a lot of work.

The 25mm molds are starting to show their age too, but so far nothing that can't be fixed with a little bit of work. more than a simple job but not unfixable.
