Dutch Army information / illustrations
« on: August 13, 2020, 06:34:41 PM »
Good day all. I’ve been looking at doing an interwar Dutch army for the VBCW period. I intend to model it as a government force Either crushing extremists at home or perhaps stabilizing our erstwhile neighbor across the channel. That being said any information on the Dutch Army during WW1 and this period would be hugely helpful. I know during the period there were two unifoms in useish the m1912 and the M1916 I think, one is green gray and the other a kind of pikegrau. Headgear consisted of either the unique Dutch kepi or garrison cap with the M16 Bowl style and m24 Dutch designed Helmets  being available but not in great numbers. Weaponry consisted of the Dutch m95 mannlicher; Shwarlose machinegun, some Lewis guns, and grenades. Tactics are another mystery, what doctrine did the Dutch Army operate at the platoon level? I know a “Stormtrooper”school was set up in 1918 and that a directive was issued stating every company would have a storm platoon. So any information on Dutch infantry tactics, employment of “bombers” and lewisguns etc, Would be awesome. Finally any color illustrations, photos or reenactors from 1916- 1936 would greatly assis me in nailing down colors for the various active troops in the newer uniforms and the reservists in the older uniforms. Thank you!

There is a book called 'Vanished Armies' (AE Haswell Miller & John Mollo) which is about the uniforms of European armies between 1907-1914.

I know that's well before the period you're looking for, but it does have a section on the Dutch and might be of use for your reservists in older uniforms, or kind of VBCW setting of veterans dusting down their old kit? (a bit like early ACW units being kitted out in uniforms akin to those of the American Rebellion)
