Any planned or decent Flodden ranges out there.
« on: August 17, 2020, 06:57:21 AM »
As the title says are any sculptors planning a Flodden range, I've heard rumours. I know Dixon make a small range. Hoping it would be 28mm and metal, if there any on the horizon.

It's still in the in the pipeline, though on the back burner,  but with it a being such a niche time period in terms of fashion and armours it will take a while!

At present I can't even offer you a guestimate.

Hi Atheling/ the Cid, an old topic, but not sure if you noticed that Pete's flags has bought out some 28mm Scottish pike men for this period. They look quite decent sculpts.

It is funny but when I saw them I thought they were very similar to the Assault group's style/ ranges. Do you know how far back in history this style of armour/ clothing can go? I assume they are wearing padded jacks, but can't seem to find a date when this style was first used.

I'm not so good with the transition of fashions in military clothing, armours and weapons at the turn of the 15th Century and into the 16th. I think Stuart of Army Royal fame would be much better placed to make that judgement.

I have spoken to Pete about the range since he first sent me pics of the green. Pete says they are good for Flodden. He's quite a knowledgeable chap too so his word is worth taking.

Alternatively, if you have the now OOP Foundry book Armies of the 16th Century, Armies of England, Scotland, Ireland, The United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands then there are a series of very good line drawings for early in the 16th century ergo Flodden. I've got the book but it is buried in a Very Useful Box under several Very Useful Boxes at the moment. If you can wait until after the weekend, or for someone more knowledgeable then me to jump in then I'll contract and compare?

They’re suitable for Flodden but I would recommend mixing them with figures in 3/4 armour and full armour for command as well as some in no armour.

After Flodden the Scots predominately ditched heavy armour in favour of manoeuvrability which the jacks provided. A comment on the battle of Pinkie was that This was taken wholesale by most to the point that nobles were not easy to immediately distinguish.

If you’re interested in the later campaigns of the 1540’s they’re ready to go without any further consideration.

I used Perry and Steelfist miniatures for my Flodden Scots;

Hi Stuart,

That looks an excellent piece of painting there and it has given me a lot of ideas. Could I ask you what colour did you use for  the upper body of the quilted jack figures?

I did buy a small number of Dixons Flodden minis back in the day as I'd planned on building a Scottish army fron the old WRG lists.
The old catalogue was only illustrated with line drawings and I was a little disappointed with them when they arrived and I compared them to the Foundry minis I already had for WOR.
That said,  they had sculpted a mini carrying a pavise and wearing the 3/4 munition armour brought over with the pikes.
