Golgotha's Colonial
« on: August 19, 2020, 02:50:26 PM »
Herewith, some huts. These are relatively generic and therefore suitable for a number of settings and periods, Ideal especially for Colonial engagements and games like Congo etc. I have further made them a size that would be equally suitable for 20mm 1/72 or 28mm. I used straw mats to detail the outside of the round containers, roofs are towel fabric glued on using Mod Podge which because it dries quickly and is less likely to warp was better than white glue. I made four huts in total each one a slightly different size and appearance. I will likely be adding some other terrain bits as well, maybe some pots and the like and a palisade fence.

Nice work they look good. I really must get around to building a few generic huts for Darkest Africa games.

Thank you Juergen, Marianas and Diablo. Certainly one can't go wrong with having some generic huts - useful for pirate and fantasy games as well.

Herewith, some Colonial miniatures, an African chief with his entourage of witch doctors. These repurposed miniatures are actually from an Easter Ireland board game called Giants, and are ideal for 1/72, see a review of the game here: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/38862/giants

I picked the game up at The Works for £10, it is a rather interesting game. The chief is larger than most 1/72 miniatures and the witch doctors are smaller so ideal really given the personages. Shown here are two Ruga Ruga Miniatures by HaT for a sense of scale.

This one is carrying some bananas. Very powerful magick. lol

The chief is very happy about his new home.

Thank you Atheling, Smokeyrone and Rick.

Herewith, some German Schutztruppe (English translation: Protection Force). Miniatures by HaT. See: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1784.
These are ideal for both WW1 (South West Africa and East Africa) as well as colonial. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_von_Lettow-Vorbeck

Herewith, some Ruga-Ruga, for WWI and Colonial wargaming. An ideal auxiliary irregular force, particularly useful are the bearers. These are by HaT Miniatures, can see them being great for Darkest Africa and Congo like games as well, see: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1786

Herewith, the start of a scratch built colonial steamer. Construction largely from balsa and cardboard mounted onto foam sheet base. Flag slots into a small tube so can be easily changed to represent different nations. Some of the details such as ladders and engine cut up from some old toys. Will be adding a gun and some further details inside the cabin which has clear plastic card for windows. Still to be added are rivets, rails and paint etc.

That steamer looks like it is shaping up to be a cracking job. You don't see a lot of 1/72 darkest Africa stuff so its interesting to see where you source your miniatures from. I would suggest your Ruga-Ruga could be a bit more colourful, if you wanted, they did like to dress quite distinctively at least in the 19th century.

Thank you Has Been and Diablo Jon - I am hoping to get the steamer completed soon...

I think there is more than sufficient available in 1/72 20mm for my purposes. I have always wanted to do more colonial gaming, having also lived in South Africa and South West Africa, now based in the UK, but are not sufficiently committed to the space, time and expense of 28mm for this period. I am looking at doing the following within colonial, specifically all set in Africa:

French Foreign Legion
Zulu Wars
Boer War
WW I
Congo/Darkest Africa type games

As for the colour of the Ruga-Ruga I personally feel the toned down rustic look is more realistic, indeed I even thought some of mine were too colourful - as I have some reds and blues in there - lol. Whilst the example you have shown look good they are too bright for my liking and I see insufficient evidence for this "uniform".

We do WW1 Africa, see Flatpack's posts (Askari is our working title).
The book recommended by Paul Eaglestone (Empress Miniatures) was 'Tip & Run'
Big thick book, but well worth reading. I only recently finished. Lots of ideas in there
that I find useful to add 'chrome' to our games. Flatpack picked us up two copies
of the internet, & at a reasonable price.
