Bit of a flash of the old aggressive Blitzkrieg tactics there old chap. That was a golden opportunity with the Sherman stuck out there in the open at the end of the road. I bet Jamie was well surprised!
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Unfortunately, the big cats have now been called away for other duties.

Going to get tough now….I worry that the last games in this particular campaign will be a race for the all important CoC dice to cancel the inevitable mortar barrage.   Still ……I shall make my offerings to the Dice Gods and see what happens….

Enjoyed following this and a great looking set of games. I have two Tiger II on the workbench and this PSC is very much on my radar.

That could keep down the heads of enemy infantry.
Very heavy suppressive fire.

Re: CoC - Western Front - Bizarre Battle!

Jamie and I played a battle at his a couple of weeks ago.   I have been so busy with work, I have not had the chance to do a write up, and truth be told, my memory ain’t what it used to be!  However, I have a few pictures, and can describe just how totally bizarre was my plight!

Setting the scene

“The 3rd Battalion, German 1058th Regiment was located in wooded high ground (Hill 20) about a mile south of Ste.-Mère-Église near Fauville. At around 10: 00 a.m., two companies of infantry and several self-propelled guns launched an attack north along the N-13 highway toward Ste.-Mère-Église. Effective fire from a 57mm antitank gun of the 80th Airborne Antiaircraft (Antitank) Battalion positioned at the roadblock on the south end of town stopped the self-propelled guns.”

Point x marks the guns position

“The German infantry withdrew a short distance to reorganize, while artillery and mortars positioned on Hill 20 pummeled the Company G positions—”

“A counterattack by Company I evidently convinced the German battalion commander that Ste.-Mère-Église was strongly held, and no more infantry assaults were launched from the south. They continued to shell the town with mortars, Nebelwerfers, and 88mm antiaircraft guns.”

This was the part we were playing.

Table

I was attacking from this end.

I had an grenadier platoon, each squad with one mg team.  I had a STuG and with the few points I had left, I took an artillery observer.

I don’t recall what Jamie had, other than the anti tank gun and I think a second Bazooka team.

So as I said, no blow by blow account, but I had a horrendous time prosecuting this one

I had to exit a unit off the far end of the table and the hedges you see were all tough Bocage.

My plan, such as it was, was to get a squad up and into a position to chuck a few smoke grenades into the road to try and make it a little harder for the gun to hit me when I started moving the STuG.    This I managed.

The anti tank gun and the STuG traded a few shots and the gun I think missed one and struck a couple of glancing shots.  The crew of the AT gun took a casualty.

We both racked up a number of CoC dice throughout the game.

I tried to bring a squad up on the left flank…

And it got dismembered when Jamie deployed a defensive squad and mmg squad.

I brought in an 81mm mortar barrage but the turn ended an£ I lost it immediately,   The smoke also cleared and the propelled gun slew off the road  rather than take more anti tank fire.

It fired it’s HE on the squad and inflicted a few casualties  before I managed to call up the mortars again….much to Jamie’s annoyance.

To be continued….

It gets a bit fuzzy here….but the turn ended again and the arty barrage lifted.

Jamie ambushed with a Bazooka team….

And once again, the front armour of the STuG saved it (I think it may have even fired twice but bot sure)

Once that was dealt with the tank started pushing up table through a hedge, risking being disabled.

Unbelievably, I got the barrage back for a third time!  And was able to drop it on the centre of the hamlet, nullifying the at gun and stopping any further deployment there.

The tank just ploughed on…..and went cross the little stream….inches from victory…..and then broke down in the shallow water!!!!

I was despondent and kept the art barrage up for a large number of rounds….failing to deliver a killer blow to the at gun……(eventually the gun commander was the only crew left!)

So many times the STuG had survived fire, only to get bogged down within sight of victory and despite me eventually being able to bring in an unprecedented three barrages with fantastic radio work……only for it to keep failing to deliver killer blows……I was just failing to grasp what the bloody hell was happening to me!

Finally it dawned on me that I had enough CoC dice to run a squad straight up the road, past the gun and off table!

I had won…..but I really didn’t feel like I had!

Great game though, great table, and hungry for the next one…….I think.

A lovely set up.
Moral victory to Jamie's Yanks I think.
Sounds like you both had a hard, but enjoyable, game.
Looking forward to the next game is always a good sign.
Well done lads. :)
