Up the Nile! First Beja Unit Complete! Yay!
« on: August 25, 2020, 09:03:58 AM »
I found a little time to take some pics of the first unit of 36 Beja.

Just got to add a shield and a spear to the base with the casualty on and that's the first unit finished. I already have the first 12 completed, varnished and based so things are progressing nicely.

If you want to see larger pictures, please pop over tomy blog where the pictures can be enlarged to their full size:

Cheers :)

Thanks, very informative.
I am assuming 'Tallus' to be some kind of very fine sand. Is that correct?

'Talus' is model railway grit or aggregate, which comes in different grades and colours. Goodness knows where the name comes from. I thought it was a bone.

Yeah, as Richard says it's the railway grit you usually see hanging next to the Jarvis stuff in model shops.

In the case of the Byzantines and Beja (is the mini's I've been mucking around with of late) I've mixed it with sand and some other kind of slightly larger pumice-ey small rocks (probably from a railway/model shop too).

I haven't left any of the filler showing through either.

Apart from those minor details the method is the same.

I am absolutely blown away at the speed at which you paint these - they look incredible! Very well done.

Thank you :)

It's perhaps a bit deceptive as there really isn't all that much to paint compared to most other miniatures. I promised myself that if I was going to paint them I wasn't going to allow myself to get 'tied up', which is actually hard for me and something that I've always struggled with a little. When it comes to painting I can be my own worst enemy  o_o

Really, really nice... Can you tell me in what game do you plan on using them? 3 miniatures on a round base is quite unusual...

They are specifically based for Up the Nile but could be used for The Men Who Would Be King, Sand of the Sudan Hail Caesar and could be adapted for use with The Sword and the Flame with casualty markers too. Quite adaptable really.

The Up the Nile rules really grabbed me after just one reading as they emphasise attrition and friction above casualty removal. I've since read them over again a few times and can't wait to roll some dice.... as soon as I'm allowed to go outside again  :'(

They look great, lovely paint jobs and basing.  I have a real thing with the 4 figures on a 40x40 so often seen.  These boys looks like a real onrush of native warriors.  Looking forward to more...

Thanks Roo. I do think they look nicely amorphic on the circular bases. They look better en masse too which was pleasing.

There are hundreds more on the way! In between two other projects  lol
