Wow.
It was just a simple question floating around as I converted some miniatures but the answers given just show the intelligence and depth of knowledge that is available through the members of this great site.

I now know at least five new things ;)

Though, over all I'd say, if you like the american shotgun on a model, use it.   :)

The Steiner Rule! If it's a just a single character they can be theoretically armed with whatever you like

(well, really that's just the Rule of Cool - Steiner was hardly alone among Eastern Front Germans in preferring and using a captured Russian PPSh-41).
