Source for Ready-Made Asteroids?
« on: September 06, 2020, 02:50:16 PM »
Okay, so I'm lazy. I admit it. And I know I could always grab some rocks from the garden. But are there any good sources for pre-painted asteroids out there? As my ships are on the big side (they are Hasbro Titanium models, often 2-3" long) I'm especially interested on larger "rocks" if that makes a difference.

Many thanks for any help!

1)Holiday near a volcano & pick up a bag of rock. Looks just like asteroids,
though a dry-brush or two helps pick out the texture.

2) Use surplus spray filler foam, onto newspaper. When it is set, pick away at it
until you get the look you like.
This method has the advantages a) Light & b)has a nice flat bottom (useful on table)

3) Take some polystyrene packaging, break it into roughly the shape(s) you want.
Spear it/them onto kebab sticks (or similar), then (out-doors) spray with  spray-paint.
This will give a 'pock-marked & melted look' When 'set' paint with cheap match-pots,
both dry-brush & thin wash. The former for texture & the latter for colouring the
pock marks.

Lava rocks can be found in hardware stores as they can be used in barbecues. I used some for BFG and once drilled and based they can be used without further modification.

Natural sponges are lightweight, and have different sized holes, so make good asteroids too.

I have used lava rocks, and while light, they're not super light, and were kind of hard to shape, although they do sort of look the part.

My current ones are foam-rubber. Just a lump of furniture foam torn to bits and then coated with a paint/PVA mix and put onto a peg and base. Now those are really light! (and soft, so they won't damage any paintjobs)

But you asked for ready made, and there's one brand that comes to mind (besides loads of Ebay sellers flogging home made stuff): Battlefield in a Box from Galeforce 9:

Bear in mind though; these are just casts of lava rocks on a stick, plus a healthy mark-up...

Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Depending on the size and number of asteroids you're looking for, Leca might be an option.
Its irregular clay balls/nuts used for drainage and isolation, available from hardware stores i big and huge bags, its a cheap material.
