1940 CoC Thread
« on: September 20, 2020, 11:42:21 AM »
Been starting a new project 1940 Western Europe
I am have problems with paint colours
My first lot Mk VI's what colour should I use for the dark green bit of the camo?

The colours I have , which one is the best?

The next part of the project. Does anybody know what is the proper colour scheme? The scheme in the instructions is totally different

According to Armoured Acorn, the A9's of 3RTR in the BEF had a colour scheme close to the one on the magazine cover - given as Light Bronze Green No.22 base, with Middle Bronze Green No.23 stripes (not quite as brown as the magazine looks to be). The darker scheme of Middle Bronze Green with Deep Bronze Green is shown on the A13's and other AFV's.

I don't know if Armoured Acorn is still going, but I grabbed their PDF's a few years back and they're superb.

Out of the three, I like the one on the right most.

As for the Cruiser, he's a very good step-by-step guide I found for your enjoyment:

The most accurate colour matches have been provided by Mike Starmer in his self-published books. You get proper paint chips which he mixes himself.
Following those chips, the best match for KG3 is Vallejo 70887 Brown Violet, to which I should add a little US Field Drab 70873 to make it browner and slightly lighter. It might be worth mixing a quantity of it, if you are building a small armoured force, since it's nice to have them all matching.
For the KG4 dark green, Vallejo Olive Grey 70888 is a good match.

I used Tamiya XF-27 Black Green - my only no Vallejo paint on my BEF
I used this in 15mm and 28mm though it was a bit dark for 15mm

The Flames of War-Website has a lot of good painting-Tutorials.
For Infantry I like the Artizan/Crusader-Tutorials: https://www.artizandesigns.com/painting-guides.php
Mick Farnthworth made a book, I think Captain Blood was involved (Right Richard?). Maybe you find some hints in this book.

Ammo of Mig has a nice set of British colors that I use for painting all my British FoW stuff.

https://www.migjimenez.com/en/acrylic-colors/317-british-colors.html

I think the color you are searching for is A.MIG-111 SCC 2 (BRITISH 1941-42 SERVICE DRAB), but as I recall, it is very close to (already suggested) VMC Brown Violet.

Oh, and regarding your pictures... You have even older Dark Angels Green than I have...  :D

But this is what I have done

Yeah, that looks good for the Vickers Tanks, Matildas and A13's. Why were the A9's a slightly different colour? Who knows or dares to dream.

There were 2 main schemes in 1940, one used G3 & G4 (G3 - Khaki green, AKA 'service colour' & G4 - Dark green) & the other G3 & G5, (Light green).  Which one used was down to the individual units AFAIK but G3/G4 seems far commoner..
