1st Corps Late Medival - Any good?
« on: October 06, 2020, 01:48:42 PM »
Hey all,

Thinking of buying a tonne of the first 6 packs listed here for a couple of projects

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product-category/medieval/late-medieval/late-medieval-infantry/

They any good? Dont think I've ever seen any posted anywhere. Good to know the pitfalls before ordering! Casting quality OK? Not much kills a project for me more than having to carve minis out of poor castings.

Any advice appreciated.

1st Corps' miniatures are excellent, they use the best quality metal available. I have 3 or 4 of their armys, can't fault them, hardly any cleaning up and paint up beautifully. I don't have these particular packs, but wouldn't hesitate to buy them.

Hi, I can only echo Rick’s comments. I don’t own these myself but have other 1st Corps figures and they are nicely cast.

The only thing to note is that these were originally produced my Kingmaker Miniatures so are in a slightly different sculpting style to 1st Corps other ranges and may be slightly different in height/build.

I have been tempted by a Hussite army in the past as this range was originally a Hussite Wars range.

Perfect - sold! Thanks gents, these will go towards a multibased vaguely-historical-but-not-really project, and a small few as an individually bandit group. Totally see the appeal of a Hussite army, great looking minis.

Just wanted to note that these arrived and thanks for the advice, excellent minis.

They're big boys, but not drastically so and are lovely castings. Will definitely consider 1st Corps again.

Jagannath, yes 1st Corps are always worth considering .However some of their ranges date back to the mid 1990s and IMHO are (a) not the best sculpts and (b) are quite small compared to other manufacturers' ranges.

Always best if you can see them "in the metal" at a show, which of course is nigh on impossible at the moment!

Glad you liked the 15th century figures. I am still considering a Hussite army, but that would inevitably lead to a their opponents as well.

Go on, you know you want to....

Sorry most of these are not 1st Corps figures, but I do echo the praise for them. I have units of them represented in my ancient Spanish, Carthaginian, Roman, Indian, Bactrian, Hussite and 18th C. Indian armies...

The old Kingmaker range is still quite nice, and I'm rather happy with the ones I got in 2016 for a Polish early 15thC force for Lion Rampant. Never played a game with them, but a joy to paint.

Some of the cavalry had some casting issues, but the infantry were all fine.

Westfalia Chris, very nice knights.  Are the liveries hand painted or decals? If the latter who was the decal manufacturer?

Thanks

Those are all hand-painted, I'm afraid.

Really nice Chris - looking forward to getting these on the painting table (though because some of them'll be used as fatasy-ish bandits I need to do some sculpting work first).

As an add-on to the original discussion:

The Kingmaker figures sit somewhere in between other popular medieval ranges - I think they look fine next to Perry HYW and WOTR figures, although the Perry ones are more dynamic and a bit cleaner in their posing. They are about as tall, but more slender than Front Rank. Foundry medievals, being much older than all these ranges, are much, much slighter, being more 25/26mm than the more modern 28mm-ish ranges.

Upps, did see it this morning. My eyes were only opened half the early hours today. Respect to your talent. You should give these beautiful figures more space on the gaming table.
