Thanks for the comments! I think I'll try some new stuff and models can always be rebased if needed.

For my 1:2400 scale WW1 ships I use 1/8 inch thick basswood or 3mm thick laser cut plywood, with roughly 1/2 inch of base around the ship model.

For 28mm War of Spanish Succession I use the same thickness of wood, but with steel underneath, and put them in carrying cases lined with magnetic material.

For individually based figures I generally use 7/8 inch steel fender washers, though some are on 1 inch or 3/4 inch. Again the goal is to have magnetic lined carrying cases. However, I might try clear acrylic for some indoor/outdoor figures.
Sailors have more fun!

I think clear plastic bases look the best, but I use 25 mm MDF bases.  I magnetize the bottoms for storage, & the mdf bases work well with the round adhesive magnets I use.

I use all kinds:
- plastic 40mm sq, 40mm by 20mm and 20mm sq for my ECW
- MDF 30mm and 40mm rounds for my Saga
- MDF 30mm hexes for Ronin
- both 30mm MDF runds and 30mm clear acrylic hexes for Pulp Alley

I have a 28mm Gaul army that I will probably go with large 120mm by 60mm MDF scenic bases from the Big Red Bat shop.

In the "Way Back When" I used Shilling sized five new pence pieces for bases.

I also used cut down 'phone cards for squarish bases.

A colleague of mine supplied me with some sharpened metal conduit that I used as a punch to get shilling sized bases out of plasticard.

In the 'nineties, I based my 40K on square or round plasticard.

I then started using the slots bases generally.

When 7TV came out, I added a circle of 7mm scale embossed Slater's plasticard on top.

When I started 28mm Bolt Action, I went over to the Renedra 25mm round bases.

Frostgrave and now Oathmark are on the same bases, but my Space Opera (including the future Spacegrave figures) remain on 30mm lipped bases.

As does the Albedo Combat Patrol.

Moderns, Vietnam and Zona Alfa are Renedra 25mm round, but my Walking Dead figures are back on 25mm slotta bases.
