28mm Alien bugs
« on: October 16, 2020, 04:04:53 AM »
Hey all!

I'm looking into adding on some aliens for some sci-fi gaming in a bug-hunt setting.  I've been considering 40K Tyranids, but figure there may be a cheaper option out there; I thought the collective wisdom of those here may offer some insight.   I'm looking for 30-50 of them for use in larger skirmish style games, and for a few dozen the GW ones seem pricey.

Other model lines that caught my eye

Rebel Minis Sci Fi:  https://rebelminis.com/sciencefiction.html
I hear these are the Mongoose Publishing Starship Trooper models.  I was curious about the Terror Mites in general, but don't know how they size up for 28mm play.

Irregular Minis:
http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/25mmRanges/25mmSci-fi%20bug%20hunt.htm
The Cave Bugs and scoprion and spider bugs look interesting, but simplistic. On the plus side, easy to paint!

Anyone have alternative ideas that would work well for hordes of aliens?  Or some pics to show scale of anything noteworthy with 28mm models?

Thanks in advance!

1st Corp used to have some bugs for their "not-Starship Troopers" range but they only seem to have the Colonial Marines now, no bugs.  :?

If you can wait a little while, Wargames Atlantic is going to release a set of hard plastic Giant Spiders that will include parts to equip them as sci-fi alien bugs with high tech weapons.

Probably not alien enough for you, but I picked up these Halloween toys for gaming purposes.

I would recommend several bags of creepy crawlies.
Plenty around at this time of year & if you wait till just
after Halloween the price drops. They are cheep & plentiful,
so if you want to do some conversions just go for it.

Check out these from Reaper.  I’ve used the Bathelian effectively.

Kryomek.

Scotia-Grendel still do them. Lovely bug-like little ones, larger ones have weapons. Big lots come up on Ebay sometimes as well and now myself and 'Roger the Spaceman' have stopped buying everything in sight should be relatively uncontested.

Here are some of mine in action:

I've been pretty lucky with bags of Tyranid "spares" picked up from swap meets and managed to put together a few dozen bugs from that. Also Heroclix Brood tend to be pretty cheap on secondary selling sites.

This thread has some older suggestions which still work, like the East Riding Aliens.

Mantic have plastic options that could work, both armed and unarmed.

Deadzone is for armed sci-fi factions including aliens like the Nameless, but for unarmed versions charging with arms raised Dreadball has sets intended to be sci-fi gridiron teams.
Z'zor for insect-people types
Nameless for crustaceans and Cthulhoids

And for clawed bony things with heads that only have mouths, the Nightstalker Reapers for Kings of War could work.

Thanks for all the replies!  Plenty of ones to pick from and get some stuff on the table.

Or these

https://crossoverminiatures.com/product/criptozoids-4/

Oh, I hadn't come across those! they look like they might work well. anyidea how they size up? They look to be a bit larger than man-sized on the one pic.

I do like the idea. I picked up some spiders from the local Target, but am looking to see what else I might find in way of cheap toys.  I saw some Ants on Amazon, and do like the idea of recreating THEM!.

I have quite a few Reaper models. But I've been fooled by their scale on some models in the past. They look a good bit larger than man-sized.

These look good too! I had only seen the ones holding weapons in the past, but I see the smaller ones might work well for what I'm after.

I had seen the Nameless and liked the little ones, but wasn't impressed by seemingly being unable to buy just select models without getting the whole minion bundle.  I didn't even see batches on Ebay or anything, but I don't know how the game plays.

The other mantic offerings look good, too!
