O group in the snow!
« on: April 25, 2021, 10:07:45 AM »
Embarked on a whole new scale (10mm) to use with O group rules.
Been a really enjoyable couple of months building the forces and terrain for the snowy Ardennes, and yesterday I had my first try out.

Great looking game.

Those look like the Victrix tanks, which infantry did you go with?

Well done. The scenery makes me feel cold...so it must be working.

Thank you!
Victrix Shermans and PIVs (still have some 251s to paint), panthers/ jagdpanzers are terrific (and cheap!) 1/44th Takara models from Magister Militum, most of the rest are Butlers 3D prints.
US infantry are from MM (nobody makes US in greatcoats, sadly), and the Germans are all Pendraken.

Thanks - I’ll have another look at MM, I’d kind of forgotten about their WWII ranges.

How have you found the Butlers Models - most of the photos I have seen of their stuff have an awful lot of striping?

Yes, there is a bit of stripping to do with them, but with a sharp knife and a good pair of side cutters it’s not too bad, maybe 5 minutes per vehicle. I would say their service is good, very fast turnaround (2/3 days), and items meticulously wrapped.
The main reason reason I went for them was the consistency of scale which can be lacking sometimes with metal models.
In particular I really like their half tracks/soft skins.
Tempted by some of the arrowhead miniatures stuff, but they are not always fully stocked.

Worth a look at Pithead, their stuff should scale well with the 1/144th stuff.

Pendraken is generally a bit smaller - particularly the older models, more 1/160th

Fantastic looking game. I kind of wish I had gone with 10mm or even 15mm for O Group but I already had too much invested in 20mm. But all my stuff is mid to late war. Maybe I can go with a smaller scale for 1939/41.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

I’m a huge fan of 10mm, and would certainly recommend it as a scale for games like O Group.

But if you already have a lot of terrain for 20mm, I’d think carefully about dropping down to 10mm, due to the need to get lots more terrain.  If you do go the 10mm route, then Pithead and Pendraken are well worth a look for early war kit.
