Hommage to Paul Bonner
« on: October 23, 2020, 11:34:29 AM »
As many of us here I'm a big fan of Paul Bonner's art for many years. I was very happy when his artwork book was published some years ago and admire his new works on Facebook. I was blown away by his latest picture emanating so much atmosphere and story-telling:

As with many of his paintings I had the instant wish to reproduce it with miniatures, but this time I started to think about in earnest and had some encouraging ideas. I don't want to copy the painting 1:1, but merely try to reproduce the story and setting. First decision was to change season to summer/autumn as I want to create some nice mossy northern woodland scene. No new miniatures should be bought, and after some browsing through my collection I found the first two figures for the victims role, after some conversion work:

To be continued ... :)

Lookin' good so far. Paul Bonner's visualisation of the Warhammer races is so embedded in how I see them.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

Great artwork by Paul Bonner.Got his artbook too.A great addition to any collection.
He did loads of the Trudvang Chronicles artwork. Not sure if this is from that setting or Warhammer.
Paul did a great one in the Ignorant Armies book.Woods with Goblins in them.

Nothing spectacular yet, I just did some scenery items for the little vignette. Some boulders from green stuff, adding a stone structure by using a small real stone. I'd like to create those moss-covered glacial boulders you can find in the northern woods - and of course in Paul's wonderful paintings. The other thing is a tiny piece of a very structured tree branch I collected years ago thinking to find some place for it in a scene sometimes ... It's just covered in diluted white glue for durability and will be painted after drying.

Overall composition is finished now:

I selected two of the marvelous dwarfs from Lead Adventure miniatures' fantastic Bruegelburg range. Those dwarfs emit so much character and come very close to Paul's battle-hardened dwarf veterans. To add some interest to the scene the dwarfs were positioned on a piece of cork adding another level. In the meantime I added a small bolt sticking out of the wolf and a crossbow will be leant against the tree stump.
Next step will be the groundwork and starting to paint everything ...

Damn, that artwork is superb. It perfectly depicts exactly what is swimming in my head when I paint dwarves or goblins! Can't wait to see how your diorama of it turns out!
