Sengoku Jidai books?
« on: April 07, 2024, 10:38:27 PM »
I'm looking at getting into Pikemans Lament with the excellent Pendraken Samurai range. Obviously the Warring States is the go too era, mirror matches with paintjob differences are great from a practical stand point, but my knowledge is rather lacking. Van anyone suggest a good book that covers the events and isn't too dry?

I've been pondering reading on this period too, as I'm starting to gear up for Test of Honour.  Found this ranked reading list, haven't read any of them to vouch for non-dryness, but just ordered #4 and #1 from EBay:
https://thesengokuarchives.com/2023/03/16/2023-anniversary-special-post-top-10-books-on-sengoku-history/

**edit**
#4 = Ninja Attack!: True Tales of Assassins, Samurai, and Outlaws by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt (2012)
#1 = Sengoku Jidai: Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu: Three Unifiers of Japan by Danny Chaplin (2018)

Personally, I try to avoid the ubiquitous Stephen Turnbull.  I've done a bit of reading on the Genpei War while prepping DBA armies.  His Osprey Campaign book on that however was the only concise overview.  Surprisingly, there is nothing like that yet for Sengoku.

The period isn't terribly well-served in English from a military history point of view, but hey, we're playing games not doing a PhD....

Amazon links for the following, but obviously grab the ISBN numbers and shop around.

For an overview you could try:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Japan-1467-1615-Essential-Histories/dp/1841764809

Turnbull usually has some maddening errors and inconsistencies, but this should give a broad overview.

As a 'wargamer's guide,' these two books are about as good as it gets in English:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samurai-Armies-Late-Sengoku-Period/dp/3963600411

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samurai-Armies-Late-Sengoku-Period/dp/396360042X

For an inexpensive painting guide for those unfamiliar details of armour and weapons, then you can usually get this book on Ebay for less than a tenner.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samurai-Recreated-Photographs-Militaria-Special/dp/186126335X

For an online painting guide, there is an excellent one here:

Osmoses is also too modest to say, but there's also his own blog:  https://tenkafubu608971038.wordpress.com/
