Aeronef miniature size?
« on: August 19, 2009, 12:59:57 AM »
Hello all,

I just purchased the Aeronef rules to take our local VSF gamming to the large scale. I have looked at some of the Aeronef miniatures available and the brigade games ones look very nice. How big are they? i.e. how long is a battleship?

I would like to try my hand at scratchbuilding some ships but I have always been "put off" by the visual appeal of such small models e.g. WWI/WWII naval 1/3000th etc.

Reading the Aeronef rules I don't think it will be a problem to double the size/ranges and play at a larger scale. I'm thinking of the battleships being about 20 cm long  1/600th scale perhaps?

Any comments???

Cheers
Fuzzy.
Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

The largest ships are around 9-10cm long, with dirigibles tending to cap this size; Aeronefs are generally smaller, I don't think they exceed 7cm; but these are not average sizes, and the vast majority of capital ships hover around the 5cm mark I dare say.

I would say the size of game would only be limited by the amount of space to play in and your ability to build large fleets of Nefs/Digs.

I assume the scale chosen for the rules was a compromise between the amount of ships you can comfortably fit onto a 4x8 ft table and having reasonable detail on the models.

I'd love to see a game played at maybe 1/300 or even 10mm, using scratchbuilt ships with land forces etc from commercially available figures.

Your 1/600 idea is certainly feasible, but would involve a fair amount of work building the fleets.

I hope it "takes off".

Sorry about that. I'll get my coat....  :(
