The Gunpowder Rebellion
« on: November 01, 2020, 03:01:39 AM »
I've been watching videos on the Gunpowder Plot and as I have a bunch of sea dogs/borders figures I thought about doing some skirmishes based on the planed rebellion.
Any ideas on rules? I have done some border reiver games but they are usually five to six figures per side and I am looking for something larger but not big battles.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Donnybrook is my go to - what I would call 'platoon scale" of 4-8 units a side (a unit being 4 veterans or 8 drilled men or 12 recruits for foot or 3/6/9 for cavalry; along with a character such as a preacher, standard bearer or nco. These characters have a range of effects from buffing units to unique skills).
The rules use a target number system; where recruits toll d6, drilled D8, veterans d10 and rare heroes d12.  Weapons are all pike and shotte period so muskets, bows etc are all included

I will follow your progress with interest.
The plotting happened in Dunchurch, only a stones throw from me, as is
Coombe Abbey, from whence they planned to kidnap James' daughter Elizabeth,
putting her on the throne as a figurehead. Great possible wargame skirmish.
When they found out it had failed they took a wagon loaded with barrels of
gunpowder & trekked around the countryside trying to raise a rebellion. Again
lots of possible skirmishes, including stealing fresh horses at a village called,
'Western under Weatherly' (between Rugby & Leamington Spa) and the final
stand off, when they tried to solve the problem of damp gunpowder by...
drying it over a fire!!!!

I've not had much luck with moving this forward as it's hard to find figures that will size well with Foundry's Swashbucklers.
Just put out 50.00 for some Warlord War's of Religion only to find out they are closer to 25mm.

Have you not had a look at the various Border Reiver ranges?
Try Hoka Hey (Nice people to deal with)
Col. Bill (Again nice people)
I'm sure there are more, perhaps others could help on that.

I had a crack at this period/scale and would agree with has.been, the Hoka Hey/Vendel figures are the best and possibly only fit for Foundry Swashbucklers. My crack at it is here:

I used a mash up of Lion Rampant/Pikeman’s Lament (with some ideas from Stuart’s blog Army Royal). If you’re interested, pm me and I’ll dig them out.

Col Bills fits well with Foundry
Agreed that the Warlord WOR figures are a bit small. So are the old Reiver miniatures figures.

I just received some Casting Room Tudors which scale perfectly with Foundry. Not all are of the same quality though, will see if I can get some pictures of these with the Assault Group Imperial Spanish

Superb subject for skirmish. :)

Argad ruleset may be a complement to other rules when you have ideas for RPG-ish scenarios.
