Wanting to get Weird: Dust 1947 vs. Konflikt '47
« on: November 17, 2020, 03:28:36 AM »
As much as I try to tell myself that I don't need to get into yet another game system, I can't get the idea of a Weird War II game out of my head. Can those who have played both Dust and K47 tell me about the merits of each?

As I see it, Dust 1947 has the better mechs. I really like the machinine krieger style minis of the Russian Steel Guard. I also like the lady ninjas for IJN, it's like the Baroness and Snake Eyes from GI Joe had babies. Dust 1947 looks like it plays a bit more board gamey than a traditional minis game. Which I totally would have been all for 10 years ago when I was just into board games, but now that I'm mostly into proper minis games, I'm not sure. The scale of the Dust minis is a bit of a turn off for me though. Ideally I'd like to be able to repurpose minis from one game to another. In reality though, I rarely do that.

On the other hand, while I appreciate Dust's less realistic approach to WWII, I also appreciate with K47's more realistic approach. 28mm scale means I can mix match and convert minis from other ranges with much less of a problem than Dust. And it's some of these conversion ideas that I can't get out of my head.

I guess what I'd really like is a Weird War skirmish game with a campaign. I suppose I could accomplish this with Pulp Alley or a Fistful of Lead, but I'd really like something tailored to the Weird War setting.

Regarding a campaign, you can always write your own.

I like that Konflict easily allows other minis and you can still use some of the Dust mechs just make up their stats.  So what that they look big.  How big is a walker anyway?  Once you start converting, you have to make up stats.

There are also some great vehicles in the Zombiesmith range for their 28mm Quar.  Some VSF mechs look right as well.

Just paint any vehicle in a "national" color and add a commander on top, and it is a prototype in field testing.

Good luck and have fun.

1/48 & 28mm can mix well if you don't have debilitating OCD for scale creep!  My bet would be to find a generic rules set that can incorporate ANY system's toys, we call if Free Range Gaming.  You buy what you want and use it the way you want to in your gaming.  No need for ruleset TO&Es or strict point limitations.  Play your weird the way you want to.

You can take a look at my homebrew system called Battleground Weird WWII or check out the excellent Weird War stuff from Two Hour Wargames!

So get the most outta your gaming and pic and choose exactly what you want to play with and how!

Metalface, you do have a 3rd choice of rules and figures, Westwind's "Secrets of the Third Reich" (SoTR). Probably the original Weird WW2 gameset.  I haven't played "Dust" but have played both K47 and SoTR, albeit earlier versions of the rules. K47 is basically "Weird Bolt Action". If you like Bolt Action I'm sure it will do fine. I found the original SoTR unsatisfying, but know others who played it a lot.
