DBA-RRR Question

I am looking at the army lists and I am a bit confused.
It will say one element is (1 pike x 2 shot). So are they speaking of an element divided onto three stands two of shot and one of Pike?
If so, how does one destroy this element? Do you have to take out all three stands before it is gone from the board?

Or does it mean one stand that has a mix of shot and pike on the same stand?
