Fisticuffs with the Celts
« on: November 28, 2020, 08:59:13 PM »
Managed to play a small game over Zoom today with my Celtic collection, pitting Conor Mac Nessa and the men of Ulster against the Connacht.  Despite fairly even forces, Ferdiad Mac Daman led the Connacht to a mighty victory, slaying Conor in single combat.  A Druid vs Druid challenge looked like a good idea but it ended quickly and brutally with the death of Cathbad the Druid - another blow for Ulster. Soon after, the Ulster men broke and ran.

Playing over Zoom isnít quite the same but itís the best thing under the circumstances, and itís always great to catch up with old friends and get the Celts out of the loft. Figures are a mix of Alternative Armies, Foundry and Northstar amongst others. We used my own Midgard rules.

Looks really good, both the figures and terrain. At least someone is getting some gaming in.

As always, a great looking game, James.
The figures are beautiful but I am particularly impressed by the table.  I like the different textures and "grasses" used.

Thank you!  The backdrop is a 4x1í piece of MDF that I painted for a WW1 demo game a few years back.  It seems to be quite multipurpose and is a nice accessory to have out for this kind of game.

Cheers Anthony!  It seems to have been a worthwhile investment in time.  Gets a lot of use and doubles as my board for photos.

As others have said, great looking figures and terrain; I especially like the way you did your river bank/lake shore.

Looks great (as your games usually do!).

How do you determine which units are Ulster and which Connacht? We have a gentleman's agreement up here to use different  shield colours based on provincial rugby colours - so Ulstermen tend to get white shields, Leinstermen in  blue etc.

Gorgeous. That painted MDF backdrop is a great idea, particularly for photographs. As has been mentioned the shoreline looks great.

Cheers Nic!  Iíd like to say that there was some thought involved in this, but I have a large bunch of Northstar Roy Eastland Celts who are quite different to their Alternative Armies brethren, so I just squared them off against each other.
