A New League of Augsburg Project in 15mm
« on: December 07, 2020, 12:58:27 PM »
I’ve started work on a new project, a French Army for the League of Augsburg period.

Currently I’m awaiting reinforcements to arrive but I had enough lying around to make a start.  The figures are mostly from Irregular Miniatures.  I did a minor bit of conversion adding shoulder ribbons to the Grenadiers.

If it is of interest you can see the first three units and some very nice flags on my blog.

Thanks Jambo.  I was hoping the reinforcements would arrive today alas they didn't.  I satisfied myself with painting a unit of scythe men that will work for Monmouth or as Jacobite levies.

Reinforcements have finally arrived and I'm happily painting away.

While waiting I got distracted and so turned to some related Jacobite/Monmouth/Williamite War stuff.  In the course of that I realised my existing armies would need some refurbishment.  Some units were painted twenty years ago when hobby time was in short supply and it shows.  I guess this happens.

Anyhow, I'm resolved to complete the French first.  Here is my second French cavalry unit a squadron of la Reine.  I'm doing two squadrons per regiment for the French cavalry.  You can see them with some Dutch cavalry and lots of Monmouth’s levies on my blog. I’ve also started work on conversions for the French Guard Battalions.

I'm about to start painting the lace on my first French Guard battalion.  The figures have all had ribbons added to shoulders and hats.  I want to paint all 16 at the same time to ensure the lines of lace are all the same size.  While waiting for green stuff to set I painted an Irish Jacobite Battalion.  With a different command stand it would work for Monmouth too.

Thank you both.

I hope my next blog post "The Duke of Berwick's imaginary Regiment of Foot" will prove of interest.  It's about why I like Beneath the Lily Banners for League of Augsburg Games.  There will be lots of new toys of course.

Then it will be the French Guards and French Army progress to date.  I'm not doing badly, regiments Navarre and Dauphin have now got their pike men, the artillery is done and I have two regiments of cavalry each of two squadrons.

Charging through your project at a fair old rate, and very good it is too. Enjoying this thread. :)

More French this time.  I've realised my Jacobites need a complete refurbishment and so will the Williamites.

I've added pike men to the line regiments and finished the second cavalry squadrons for la Reine and Royal. My first battalion of the French Guard bellow.  The pike stands improve the look of things I think.  Anyhow, lots to see including the Royal Italien if you click the link.

Photos of another five French battalions are now on my blog.  The include three of the French battalions sent to Ireland, the first battalion of the Swiss Guard and the German Greder Battalion.

The figures are a mixture of Dixon, Essex and Irregular 15mm.  I find they work well together even on the same base.

I had to do a bit of thinking about where to get my 15mm  French Dragoons from.  Mainly because I wanted them in stocking caps.  I ended up doing a bit of mixing and matching.

The first regiment is now done, Firmacon's Dragoons. As you can see I like to have them mounted and dismounted.   The mounted are Old Glory 7YW conversions. The dismounted are Gladiator from fighting 15s.  The flag is from Sir Sidney Roundwoods blog and was made by him.  I was delighted to find it.

here is a pic of the finished unit.  I'm still thinking about horse holders.

You have a very nice collection. I really appreciate your flags. I went through some difficulty with mine, having printed what looked like good quality from my inkjet printer but they ran when I finished them with matte medium. I switched to solvent based varnish and they survived. I attached a pic of one of my regiments. They’re Venexia, I can’t believe being lucky enough to find a package on eBay. The others are mostly Khurasan, and Essex.
