I'm having the sculptor put on the tassels, shorten the fez a tad and crump them up a little. They are suppose to be on campaign so they should look a little worn.

Totally realistic choice to have them depicted barefeet..from what i read they , at best, just used locally made sandals but only during marches...in my opinion those picts or plates depicting them with shoes are posed ones...puttees where sometime used, together with bare feet, but the effect of bare feet and puttees is a little bit weird once the miniature has been painted..bacpacks where never carried..contrary to the illustration personal effects where carried, on campaign,  by porters or by their wives..finally, maybe, i would also provide some of them with  an holstered "coupe coupe" (panga)

It wasn't until the late 1890's that the Senegalese uniforms started to become more formal and really wasn't in use until after 1900. A lot of times when on campaign their uniforms basically fell apart and they wore whatever they could find.
