Marco55, the books by Mr Nafziger are outstanding. I have several from multiple periods and theatre’s.

Just out of interest (I probably shouldn't ask as their is some danger in it on my part!), are there any miniatures specific to the French Conquest of Western Sudan available in 28mm?

Castaway Arts are nice, and mix well with Foundry Darkest Africa adventurers etc.

Other ranges are nice too but are slightly different in size. Artizan Design are bigger... and Askari Miniatures slightly smaller...

A sad thing with Castaway is that they haven't expanded their range since many years. Long ago I had planned to  build a "tata" a Western Sudanese fortress but with the lack of more different figures I still haven't done it.

That's the reason I never have done it either.

You have to find some key words... "tata fort mali" or "tata fort senegal" bring some research results amongst other things.

Also, in French only I think...

Basically there are two different things (which can be complementary): a wall and towers around a village; and walls between very close neighbouring huts of a same family which compose very small forts inside the village, French officers of the late 19th C. wrote these were very effective.

After becoming interested in this period I decided  on a project to do when I retire (in May I hope).I would like to do a diorama.  It won't be a historical fact dio but a generic battle of the French fighting Rabih's army in the west african/Chad region. As we were talking about a tata a while back I decided to see if I could get some kind of west  sudan old fort type of structure built so I contacted Andrew Birch of Colonial Steamboat Co. and he came up with a idea for me. It's a generic type not modeled on any particular structure. I think it came out pretty nice. It's not quite as big as I would have liked but for shipping purposes and shipping costs. :o it's perfect. It's 1/72 scale as I want to be able to put quite a few figures on the diorama.
Below is some photos of it. I think it looks even better in person. It's darker than the photos show. looks more like a mud fort.

Marco55, I just answered my question to you when I saw this post. This sounds like a fun project. Andrew does great work!!! I tried to contact him
Several times about making a Chitral house and fort for me, but luckily he never responded so I won’t have to pay those crazy shipping fees. Another friend of mine, Bill from Gamers Garage makes awesome custom terrain in the US based in Colorado. I’ve been going to him for my custom terrain needs.

Love the fort.
Very useful for a lot of different  time periods.
