multibased 10mm fantasy ruleset ?
« on: December 30, 2020, 12:39:33 PM »
HI,

I've got a few 10mm armies, figures are based in groups of a few minis on 40mmx20mm bases, and I'm searching for a simple and fun ruleset to play them. Any advises ?

thanks !

HOTT or the old GW warmaster rules are good bets

Hordes of the Things. It's a great game, and the fact that it has required only one or two minor rule changes in almost three decades stands as testament to how well designed it is.

Hi,

I am diving into 10mm fantasy, too very soon.
Because of Threads like this

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101538.15

I bought „Mayhem: Fantasy Mass Battles“ by Brent Spivey.
Sounds like a lot of fun for me.

Warmaster Revolution (that is free, and maybe you find some players around you) seems a bit to fiddly for me, but I will read it too. As for mechanics it just have the order system that is interesting but a bit to random maybe.
Mayhem has more interesting features for decision making and push your luck. But again I have to read both. Read the thread I posted above!

I wonder why you are not told him about mayhem, too?

Fantastic Battles is a great set of rules, aimed mainly at the smaller scales and used 4cm squares per 'company' so two of your 40x20mm bases would fit as one 'company'.

thank you all for the answers. All the games sounds interesting, but I'm especially interested into Mayhem ruleset. I like the fact you can use whatever basing option (if I understand correctly). This way I could play my 10mm armies but also my 15mm demonworld (based for demonworld) regiments.

I'll search for more info.

edit : I just bought Mayhem on wargames vault, now I have to read it (and print it...maybe first)

Seconding Fantastic Battles! Awesome rules. I’ve been on the hunt for the golden rule set for multibased fantasy and tried all of them, including Mayhem. Fantastic Battles has the best game flow, the command and control elements of Warmaster, easier unit customisation than Mayhem or Chipco, and you can use any multibasing.
While square bases are the standard, rectangular basing is also fine, and there is only a very minor difference to how units conform in melee. Both basing systems in melee are explained and illustrated with diagrams side by side.

I didn't mention Mayhem purely because of the square bases that it uses (although it's perfectly simple to use two 40x20 bases, of course). Mayhem is certainly a great game. Although I'd played HotT as a kid, I actually got into Mayhem first second time around. But although I really enjoy Mayhem, we've probably ended up playing HotT at least ten times as much over the past few years.

The main reason for that is that it's simply much quicker and easier to set up a game of HotT - you can select your army in about a minute. Mayhem takes a bit more work and forethought.

Of course, if you're planning a game well in advance, the army-construction process could be a lot of fun. One caveat might be that with few anchoring points for the stats, two players might well create armies that performed oddly relative to each other. But that's a small point.

Of the two, I do prefer HotT as a game overall, though I'd like to play a lot more Mayhem.

Mayhem will be the way to go for me, I think.

Good luck with it - and let us know how you get on! And Happy New Year!

One thing about all these massed-battle games is that you can happily hop from one to another with the same armies - just doubling up bases if you need squares.

Warmaster is very elegant, but requires a large table and many models. There was/is a 1 stand version around somewhere in the net, that is very playable, though.

If you don‘t mind a little tinkering Hail Caesar and Pike and Shotte from Warlord Games are both iterations of the Warmaster engine (like Black Powder) and would give a specific period flavor to your games.

I have bought Of Armies and Hordes from Ganesha which is also a brilliant read, but haven’t yet been able to play it. It does need a very specific tabletop layout, though.

@ Hobgoblin: I’m pretty sure I asked this previously, but is there a digital version of HoTT available?

Oh, yes - now that is a brilliant game! It's completely scale and basing agnostic. And yes, you need to break the table up into lots of zones - although that can be done very easily with scatter terrain.

I don't think there is, though you can get the print rulebook on Amazon.

IIRC they had one available for a short time but it was pulled
