Storing tiles of miniature terrain. Your solutions?
« on: March 15, 2021, 02:07:18 PM »
I almost finished painting my first ever 2 armies (Saxon and Vikings) It took me only a year. ^^
Now I am planning to soon begin making a battle board. My idea is to construct it form 6 square tiles (61 cm x 61 cm) each. That would make exactly 6’ by 4’ board when put together.
Now, I am wondering how to store it. The simplest solution would be to put it in a big cartoon box, but I much prefer something better. What I was looking at so far is amazon, eBay and Ikea display cabinets, the prices of their products are very good but didn’t see anything large enough to fit 61 x 61cm. As a last resort I may attempt to build some custom case myself.
How would you solve the problem of storing this large tiles?

Perhaps some type of kitchen type storage cupboard.  The standard width for such things is 60 by 60 so you would want to make your boards small enough to fit inside.  If you put runners in the unit the boards could sit on them.  You should be able to fit them all in one cupboard then.  I would get the cupboard first then make the boards to fit rather than the other way around.

The most important thing with terrain boards is to store them flat. Do not try storing then on an edge unless you can ensure they are tightly packed and clamped/fixed vertical. If there is any angle they will bend and bow over time.

Mine are stored on edge, but packed together. No warping. They live under a custom-made table which is exactly the right size for them. I guess there must be about 20 or so 2 foot square boards, plus 2x1, 2x0.5 and curved edge pieces to do wide rivers and the like

I couldn’t find anything, no cupboard nor cabinet that would have 62-63cm of depth. The only thing that I found that would be somewhat practical (but still not perfect) is architect plan drawer but with prices around £1000 it’s way more than I am willing to spend for the purpose of storing terrain boards.
Storing under wargaming table would be PERFECT unfortunately I don’t have enough space to own one. So, I have to use a dining table to play any games I want but there's no storing there.
I have a week or two before I finish painting my army, so I am going to keep looking but if I won’t find anything, I’ll probably try to build something adequate.

Given that it sounds like space is a constraint, would you not consider a terrain mat as an alternative?

A 6X4 seems to run £45-£65 approx.

Of course, I considered a terrain mat, but I am one of those who are in this hobby more for the process of creation rather than gaming itself. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait until I finally start playing miniature games, but I want to make something more… ‘artistic’ than a simple mat.

You could use garage shelving units as a base. Mine are 18" deep so the boards would fit with a bit of overhang. Or you could put 2 12" units together to make a 2' unit (my units you can make half height and are the basis of my gaming table). It would be pretty easy to box in the units if you wanted.
