Unknown Stalingrad: Enemy at the Gates

Stalingrad. The word resounded around the world 70 years ago, and is now one of the most significant symbols of heroism and selflessness of the Soviet people. The city on the streets of which events unfolded in the autumn of 1942, and which became a turning point in the Second World War. During Soviet times this momentous page of history was varnished from all sides, as a result of which the entire Stalingrad battle left but a few notions in the general consciousness: Pavlov's House which was not captured by the enemy, Mamaev Kurgan which passed from hand to hand many times, and the basement of the department store where the German Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus unexpectedly met with fighters of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. In this book, I will try to slightly expand the «geography» of heroic events, and most importantly, to recall those fighters and commanders of the Red Army, thanks to which the word «Stalingrad» became the analogue of «Kuzma's mother» for all uninvited guests from the West, and the eponymous toponym forever registered on the streets and squares of European cities.

Part 2
Unknown Stalingrad: «Grenade, Grenade, My Grenade…»

Today in Russia the 13th Guards Rifle Division is the symbol of street fighting in Stalingrad. However, the real events of those days have changed over time on the pages of historical and literary works. As a result, the true story imperceptibly faded into the background, giving way to beautiful legends.

Part 3
Unknown Stalingrad: The Elevator

For the Germans, the Elevator building became the symbol of the fierce and bloody close-quarter fighting for each street, house and floor in Stalingrad. This is a rather rare case from the history of the Soviet-German War, when the selflessness and the heroism of Soviet soldiers were unconditionally confirmed by their enemy.

Part 4
Unknown Stalingrad: the Central Station

Whereas on German side the first in a series of symbols of the Battle of Stalingrad was the Grain Elevator, in Soviet propaganda this place was firmly occupied by the Central Railway Station. A confluence of circumstances led to the fact that the feat of his defenders, soldiers of 1st Battalion, 42nd Guards Rifle Regiment, 13th Guards Rifle Division, became widely known. However, even in this case, the front-line correspondents could not do without distortions of reality.

Part 5
Unknown Stalingrad: The City Garden

Towards the last days of September 1942, Germans had managed to capture the central and southern sectors of Stalingrad, almost completely destroying the Soviet units fighting here in heavy battles. Today's story is about the fallen heroes of the last battles in the city center.

The best series I have seen is the battleground Stalingrad series, well researched and follows a day by day blow including the lead up campaign
