“Conquistador” Period Rules
« on: January 11, 2021, 11:30:41 AM »
Having followed another thread about Conquistadors, I would be intrigued to find out what rulesets are recommended to game this genre. I have bought some figures for use as a “Frostgrave Ghost Archipelago” faction but may look to expand as a true “historic” gaming period.

I recognise that the period has its challenges when it comes to recreating what obviously happened in the late 15th/early 16th centuries.

 What is out there??

 Thanks in anticipation....

Irregular Wars - is very much aimed at this period and the European vs Native style battles.  It is a small battle set - with force being around 15-20 bases. Base size (and figure scale) is not defined, as all measurements are in Base Widths.

Pikeman's Lament rules by Osprey?
The author had produced army lists for this conflict  :)

Donnybrook maybe? It's got 17th century New World forces which would adapt back in time fairly easily.

Either of the three sets above would do.

Irregular wars is a great set, but as you want to play GA you might have to find a way to manage Irregular wars unit bases. Sabots/trays would work fine though. Of the three sets I think it would need most figures, maybe only a little more..

Pikemans Lament and Donnybrook are similar sized games in terms of figures and have individual based units. Both are set after the conquistador period but the rules are pretty generic and both have tribal warriors so would work ok.

All three sets have little add ons - characterisation of leaders and random events which help add a little flavour. PL and DB are, perhaps, a little more flexible. I'm playing some mid-late 16thC solo skirmish games and decided on PL over the other two, which I both own.

For smaller games, Osprey's En Garde has lists for Conquistadors. There was even a magazine article (WSS?) the other year about adapting the Congo rule-set for Conquistador expeditions.

As has been suggested, Donnybrook would work. Certainly it's what I'm using for my early 1600s North American settlement skirmishes (Jamestown and all that). I prefer it PL as it has a slightly stronger emphasis on characters

I think it would be possible to adapt Bill Hooks quite successfully.  In fact I might have a go.

There is a Spanish Meso-American  Rampant version on the I Live with Cats blog.  It looks not bad at all and is free.  I think I have a link somewhere let me see if I can find it.

Chaps, thanks for the answers. I’ve looked at “Irregular Wars” and might go for them. I would use sabot bases which are easily available and I use for many other armies/periods.
