Fistful of Lead: Jonny Quest vs Cobra - Scenario
« on: February 02, 2021, 07:21:48 PM »
As I was thinking about gearing up for an assassination scenario using ninja vs some ashigaru/samurai I decided to shift gears a little and work out some mechanics using some awesome Jonny Quest minis I was given for Christmas.  I wanted to again borrow from Dark Day of the Destructo Ray but put a whole different spin on things from the second scenario.  This would be a pure rescue mission for the Quest family vs the minions of Cobra.  They are rescuing a captured scientist who Cobra is using to develop weapons for them.  It also lets me take a trial run with 6 grunts on the field, broken into teams of 2 instead of 3, so that I can work out guard mechanics for the Ronin game.

I thought it might be good to share the scenario and get some feedback on how folks think the patrols will work out (and also maybe give the good Baron some ideas).

Here we have the villainous forces of Cobra:

I converted up some Perry Africa corps minis for the classic cobra trooper.  Pretty easy with just a putty face mask and shaving down the jodhpurs.  The vipers are some converted Mad Robot minis, with a little green stuff for the gloves and face shields.  The commander is an excellent Golgo’s Island mini.  Dear old Dad needs an editor, however, as I accidentally left the names off their cards (which have all of the abilities spelled out, so they are more easily referenced during gameplay).  Guess I will print them again…

Then we have Footsore’s amazing Jonny Quest miniatures (again Dad, hire an editor to add the names!):

When I found them in the fall they quickly became my number one Christmas list item.  I loved Jonny Quest as a kid, and bought the entire series on DVD a few years back.  I watch them with my kids who enjoy them just as much as I did.  Race is the Leader, with Dr. Quest as the Specialist and the boys/bandit are all regulars.  Race has a SMG, Leadership, Veteran, Master, and Dead-eye. Dr. Quest has a SMG and a Laser Pistol (as he was often tinkering with some sort of weapon) along with the Smart and Gadgeteer traits. Jonny has Pugilist while Hadji has Slippery (he was always hiding in something or getting away) and a Sword.  Bandit rounds them out with Thundering Charge and Fangs (counts as a CCW that cannot be lost/removed).  They all have the Fearless team trait (very appropriate for the Quests given all of the weirdness they fought)

Scenario:
Dr. Katherine ‘Kat’ Journey has been kidnapped by Cobra.  She is being held in a research building and must be rescued before Cobra can unleash her deadly freeze ray upon the world.  Hidden in the complex are a cache of prototype weapons and a computer terminal with partial schematics on them.  The Quest family must sneak in under cover of darkness, rescue Dr. Journey, and sabotage Cobra before making an escape.

Cobra forces are on patrol, and the evil Cobra Commander is in the command center.  The Cobra Troopers will generally patrol back and forth from command to the research building, with one pair moving the short length of the base.
The Quest Team enters from one corner of the table, along the NW edge of the base.  One viper is placed in the middle of the base and one on the SE side (in the middle).  Two troopers start in front of the research building, 2 in front of the command building (Cobra Commander is also placed here), and two are on the side opposite the quest team (in the middle).

Rules:
When activating any of the Cobra forces each side rolls D10 and the player with the highest roll may move that unit (the 2 man trooper teams count as one unit, the vipers and the Commander are each their own unit).
To rescue Dr. Journey, the Quest team must make a difficult task roll to hack into the research building.  Dr. Quest requires only a standard task roll.  At this point Dr. Journey joins the team using the following Profile:
Dr. Journey:  CC: D8 Shooting: D12, Smart, Lucky.  Armed with:  Freeze Ray Rifle: 12/24”  Any model hit with the freeze ray immediately takes enough shock to incapacitate them.  Frozen models cannot raise the alarm (see below).  Otherwise this weapon causes no wounds.

Sabotage:
The Quest Team can attempt to search each building other than the Command Center and Research Center.  Roll a D4.  On a 3 it is the Computer Banks on a 4 it is the Prototypes.  If after searching 2 of the four buildings neither has been found, keep rolling until one of the two comes up, the remaining building is the remaining item.

The team may Sabotage these items needing a Hard Task roll on either.  Dr. Quest, and Dr. Journey count the computers as a regular task, and Race counts the Prototypes as a regular task (hey, a super spy has to be good at blowing stuff up right?).

Raise the Alarm:
Any time a Quest figure enters within 12”, does not end in base contact, and within line of sight of a Cobra model the Cobra troops may add a cumulative +1 to their roll for control (i.e. getting close will eventually start to hurt the Quest team).
If the Quest team engages in close combat with the Cobra model and does not eliminate it (or both in the case of the teams), the Cobra player adds +2 to their roll for Control.
Once the Cobra player reaches +8 the alarm has been raised and the Cobra player can act as normal.  Note that failing to eliminate the Commander in one turn (either shooting or in close combat) will also automatically raise the alarm.

Victory:
The Quest Team achieves a partial victory if they can get Dr. Journey off the table and unengaged (clear the SE or NW corners by 6” with no enemy line of site or reach the table edge unengaged).
The Quest Team achieves a major victory if they can get Dr. Journey off the table and sabotage one of the two minor objectives.
The Quest Team achieves a total victory if they can get Dr. Journey off the tables and sabotage both minor objectives.

I as Un-fun Dad will be playing Cobra of course, and my kids will play the Quest team.

Really enjoyed those original Jonny Quest adventures when I saw them in the ‘70’s. So much so I am tempted to buy a DVD. Looks like a great interpretation for the table. Thanks for sharing. Shame Footsore UK don’t carry those miniatures, although perhaps it is just as well, they are very good, but seem a bit pricey.

Indeed.  Someday I will pick up Zin and the troopers.  Not cheap, but awesome renditions of the series.  I will have to think about the mummy as well.

Nice idea for the patrol rules. I have those Quest figs too. Waiting for an in person game to unveil them.
