Making an Early Republican Roman Force
« on: February 08, 2021, 08:19:36 PM »
For those who read my goals for 2021, it is no surprise that I am working on an Early Republican Roman force to use with the upcoming Wars of the Republic ruleset from Osprey.  I believe they are set to be published in November of 2021.  So far, I have been playtesting the rules using my famous Paper Templates, but for the release this year I will want a much better looking army so I can help advertise the game with Batreps and the like.  Therefore, I need to get a usable army up and running by September or so.

I started documenting my progress on the Blog with some discussion about the Wars of the Republic ruleset....

Here is where it all started....

and here is where I am at currently....

I have another update up on the blog.  However, I have the first troops done!

Some very early Roman skirmishers, so early they are not even proper Velites.  Just some guys with Javelins.

I also did some work on the main infantry lines, but still have a ways to go.

You can read the details and see the progress on the blog.....

Looking great, but how do you know what kind of basing you’ll need!?  :o

Ugh.... basing.  The bane of Ancient wargaming.....

Here are my thoughts:

1. I am single basing them as I can then always use other techniques to make single base into multi-based with trays and other tricks, plus I can also use them in games where I need single bases.

2. This game uses the Men of Bronze engine with some tweaks, which is also scale and model agnostic and works with any basing.

3. Men of Bronze is a Unit vs. Unit system, so as long as everyone is based about the same, it will work fine.

4. I have some inside information on the rules.   lol

I think the Early Republican Roman army is done....

There is more discussion about the decision making and the individual units on the blog.....

You can read all the gory details about these 40 soldiers of so on the blog.

I think I have all my Republican Romans done...... for now.

Here is the last entry about them until I get some cavalry.  I am not 100% convinced by the Victrix cavalry for the Republican Romans, so am open to some suggestions on adding those units.  Got some?

The Victrix Roman Republican cavalry are giants. I got round this by converted the Victrix Greek light cavalry figures by cutting through the body and substituting a body of the Victrix Iltalian allies plus their helmeted heads.

This gave me alot of Allied cavalry and since these made up at 75% of the roman cavalry, it worked for me. The remaining Roman cavalry was provided by converting some Wargames Factory armoured Celt cavalry by using Beotian helmets. I also substituted their horses which as stumpy little beasts.

Only just spotted this thread - lovely work on these.  Definitely go for the Iberian cavalry to convert into Romans if you think it’ll work for you.

Thanks!

I look forward to getting in more games with fully painted armies now and ditching the paper templates I use for playtesting.
