British Battlesuits
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:49:19 AM »
I'm starting work on a few "Power Armoured" British troops, and I'm a bit stuck for what colour to paint the chaps. Should they be composed of mainly Browns or Greens? Camo? What kind of markings? Here are the minis as from GZG, to give you an idea:

I'm at a complete loss at what to paint them, so I've just going to leave it to what you people suggest (sensibly now!  lol)

English Uniform,Vallejo 70921,which is a khaki, should do the trick. For the base colour use a dark brown, mix with the English Uniform as first highlight then lighten with a buff colour for the final highlight.I like to then wash the recesses with black/brown mix.The helmets can be in a dark green......if you like.As for cam? You could try a green ochre as base coat with green and earth colours.Paint in broad but not too broad stripes ,up, down and across(this is actually the Denison Smock cam.).You have to out line everything with this cam. (ie the pockets etcetera),if you highlight too much you get a German water pattern(sort of),as highlighting softens the edges.

   Hope this helps.

They can be Royal Marines, and thus have Naval Dazzle camo!

I know that isn't sensible and you asked for sensible, but it is supposed to be Weird War, and you have to admit that is a pretty weird way to camoflage something.

What service are they attached to? Army, Navy, and Air Force would have very different uniforms I think.

Army (eg Royal Engineers, or maybe a newly-formed Guards Regiment?), and Royal Marines (I think they're technically part of the Navy, but don't quote me on that) would use the schemes above (probably), Navy would use dark blue I guess, and RAF would be grey-blue.

Or they could be a completely new branch of the service. So pick your own scheme. But that might lead to them looking less 'British' I suppose.

If they were mine, I'd paint them with a khaki base with olive drab or black disruptive pattern.  I'd try them both and see which is best.  Unless they are in the desert then sand overall with grey and light blue patches like the Caunter scheme.

The markings would be the radio callsign on the shoulder similar to AFVs of the period - circle, square, diamond, triangle with the number in the centre.  Possibly a WD marking - Tanks began with "T" followed by a number.  Maybe "B" for "Battle Suit", then a Division or unit marking - an Armoured Foot Knight perhaps?  Then each individiually named after a knight of the Round Table or after a famour Medieval knight from the wearer's home area?

So that's where The Beatles got the inspiration for 'Yellow Submarine'.

Painted a squad of these up for my SoTR force. I used Catachan Green for the armour, washed it with Devlan Mud, then added Bleached Bone to the base coat for highlights.

I painted my NAC platoon (including some PA chaps) GW scorched brown and drybrushed then with VGC Cobra Leather (VGC40 - I think they changed the name).

Thanks for the replys!

@ Plynkes - That's a certainly interesting idea. And I only said sensible to stop anyone suggesting "lepoard print" or such like  lol.

@ dadlamassu - Knights of the Round Table is something I may use, thanks!

I think Ill go from a green base, and see about camo from there.  :P
