Lock Down Romans
« on: February 16, 2021, 10:12:54 AM »
Hi,

I painted these up as I wanted to try the GW Contrast paints. I am quite happy with them. Agema Minis

these were completed during the first lockdown, I had a broken foot at the time so had time on my hands. Playing with contrast paints at the time to see if I could use contrast paints for armour rather than using Vallejo Old Gold.

I realised that they do not really work on flat surfaces as you can see from the Shields. But I could just simply put transfers on them to solve that problem

I use Contrast a lot.  They are very good!

You could try using a second application for the shield but only around the inside of the rim. Lay the figure down so the paint won’t run down but pool around the edge to create the shading effect.

Came out very nice indeed. I use the contrast paints a lot as well and they help speed up painting indeed

These look great, definately some of the best results that I've seen with Contrast paints.

Agema are a great company and I'm looking forward to receiving my Etruscan kickstarter figures to go with the Romans and Carthaginians I've already had off them.

I have also gone for the kick starter Etruscans as I like the animation that you get with the Agema minis. I have been playing around with the new Agema Allied heads on Victrix bodies. you have to snip off the arms and shoulders as they are a bit wide.  I found that the Victrix Allied Roman box set minis tunic comes down past their knees and it looks a bit odd.

Just ordered a photographic lightbox so I can take some more pics as I borrowed the one that was in this post.

Cheers

What colour did you use for the armour?

Hi,

For the Armour, I used the following recipe all Contrast paints mixed are mixed with GW Contrast Medium for the shading and GW and Vallejo paints for highlighting.

Base Coat  - Iyanden Yellow 2 coats allow to dry. Make sure it is evenly coated with no pooling.

Shading - depending on how dark you want to go I went for Nazdreg Yellow 50/50 mix Contrast Medium I painted this around the armour to give some darker depths of shade.

More Shading - 50/50  snakebite contrast and medium, for deeper shadows / Fireflayer flesh, can be used but best to play around with some samples.

Highlighting - This I found to be the fun bit. Then I used wraith bone mixed with contrast medium then highlighting up to Vallejo Ivory.

Once my lighting box turns up I will post some other painted contrast Roman minis.

Nice stuff.  I've been hanging out to buy  those metal  Agema Romans for ages.   Hopefully they'll get the supply back soon.    And the Etruscans and some Agema Gauls too  :)

I think Gregg (owner of Agema miniatures) is looking at making them the same size as the Etruscans are going to be as they are a little smaller. Still good models though.
