looking for a book

I am looking for, the title a book, I read some years ago.

It was the story of a fictional family from roman times till about 1400.


The first member was a roman legionary who settled in Gaul

There was a Norman who fought and killed a knight and joined Duke William's army,which brought the family to the uk.

The family chose a lamp,as their coat of arms.

The last chapter was Harry the Hand gunner

I think it was written by an American  around the 60,s

Sorry all that's all I recall.


Please can anyone shed any light on the title or author?
