Advice Sought - Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures
« on: February 20, 2021, 12:48:47 PM »
I have recently bought the Ghost and Banshee set from Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures. Both figures are made of a see-through plastic of some sort. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for painting the figures without losing the see-through effect.

I would post a picture of the figs but sadly my internet skills aren't up to it  :(

Thanks in advance for any help!

thin washes of ink are your best bet.

I haven’t seen these particular figures but the usual approach with clear plastic minis is to give them a wash with acrylic ink of an appropriate shade, presumably a fairly light green or blue. This presupposes all you want is a simple tint, as would probably be adequate for ghosts and the like.

I’m sure someone will be able to provide more specific advice and perhaps show examples.

Given the results I've seen on Clear Bones minis I'd say give Tamiya clear inks a try

I’ve just discovered a new - to me at least - product from Green Stuff World which may be of interest, a bright green fluorescent pigment. It comes in powder form and can be added to various media including inks to give a glow in the dark effect, which may or may not suit your idea of a spectral appearance.

Many many moons ago, oh this makes me feel old, some of the test shots for the Drastik Plastic Orcs were done in clear.  I undercoated and painted a couple very carefully by hand leaving certain parts such as eyes and teeth clear and then drilled them out and inserted leds inside. Very crude and not as fancy as you think but it worked a treat. I remember that although the skin had been painted in Citadel greens the light did still illuminate it.

If you want to maintain the transparency, one thing that actually works rather well on the Nolzur's/Deep Cuts is to get some of the kids "stained glass" plastic kits from the craft isles at the store, it works rather well on them...unlike bones where the translucent/transparent can have some issues if you try to mix things for effects.

I wasn’t aware of the Green Stuff World pigment but it sounds perfect for a variety of projects - GW’s Black Coach springs to mind.

Thanks to everyone for their input - much obliged!
