What's your price point for painted minis?
« on: February 26, 2021, 09:00:50 PM »
I've just noticed a 28mm figure I'm watching on ebay is already over 200 pounds in bidding!!!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HAROLD-ANGLO-SAXON-KING-Painted-28mm-Footsore-Miniatures-SAGA-Dark-Ages-/265056547108?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

That's shocking to me and there must only be a handful of people in the world willing to pay that for a figure.

I had a disaster today, selling 3 figures for 4.33 pounds the lot, including postage, but I'm glad they went to someone who will enjoy them.

I hear some say that 4 pounds is reasonable, which is as much of a surprise to me.
Knowing the time and effort it takes to get a figure looking good, I'd think that, at the very least, time and figure cost should be the start point.

What about you, what's the most you've paid, or the least and   where do you think the cost should be set?

Cheers

Ryan

Depends on how good is the paint job. I would be willing to pay a good chunk of money for a mini painted by Sascha Herman or Rubén Torregrosa. Some others -like Ängel Giráldez- are actually out of my price range. Not that I wouldn't be willing to pay for his job, but that I have not the money!

For jobs like the one in the link, maybe 12-15 euros. Tops. 200+ is overpriced, in my opinion.

It is currently going for 3-4 times his usual prices so it looks like an oddity.

I thought that but there are a good number well over 100 now.
I watch his auctions and usually it's 40 to 60, seems there is new interest.
It will be interesting to see how it develops.

This subject comes round a couple of times a year. Things are worth different amounts to different people, the people bidding must think it's worth it. I've seen things go for big money that look like they've been painted with a 12" bass broom and at the same time beautifully painted figures go for peanuts. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There's also a lot of people who are money rich and time poor, I've sold thousands of pounds worth of figures to one wargamer in America, he loves to game but can't afford to waste his time painting.

If you look at his feedback he seems to have one or two customers that win the auctions. Lovely paint jobs but well out of my price bracket. Personally I pay about £10 for painted minis for my website but my painter has joint issues at the moment so I am back to painting myself... I can paint quite tidily but take forever unfortunately.

I once paid forty quid for a painted 'Giants in Miniature' figure, which I couldn't resist improving (is that arrogant?) after he arrived...

1. I needed that particular figure for a game in a hurry

2. He was out of production

3. I'm a rich bastard

Anyone gormless enough to pay forty dumpers for a single 28mm wargames figure wants taking out and shooting!

Lol

More money than sense.
He could have had 10 painted for that price, no doubt.

Still, can't fault the painter, he's reeled the guy in and probably can't believe his luck.

I do believe I've added within your quote.
Not sure how that happened, I'll figure it out.

 lol lol lol lol

Definitely, wish I could find some one daft enough to pay that kind of cash for a painted figure  :D

But I suppose, if it’s taken him 8hrs to paint it’s a bloody good day rate, where as if you spend 3hrs on a figure and only get £10 it’s not really worth it is it.

I do not pay for painted miniatures - though I would consider commissioning stuff to my liking if I had the funds....but even then it'd have to be something I really didn't want to paint.

I see nothing beyond $20-35 for that miniature posted.  Doesn't look like anything special.

However, I have seen people post stuff like this which...kinda blows my mind and I think - if someone had tons of excess cash - I would understand.

He at least has close-up pictures and seems to have serious skill. That figure is around what the other one above cost.  The guy's other eBay listings are similarly impressive.

I suspect he may have mates putting in false bids?
As for the painting on the miniature Elbows posted; he’s a brilliant painter, not my style really. You can have a look at his stuff on Putty and Paint, lots of beautiful painting, fantastic inspiration if you’re inclined.
As for price point,I can paint to a certain standard reliably(at least as well,if not better) than the original post, why pay for it?
Interesting to see what Cubs,Dags, and Duff may say :)
