There has been an episode of Deadwood, shortly after Hickcock got shot and Bullock chased McCall, IIRC. Bullock killed an Indian and somebody pointed out to him, what the different symbols on the horse meant. Hope to be of a little help.

Welcome aboard! Christin had this link posted on her website.  It shows some horse markings for both war and hunting.

If you want an excellent single reference for Plains Indians, you won't go far wrong if you can dig up Thomas E. Mails' The Mystic Warriors of the Plains.  Hundreds of nice clear drawings of everything from tools to weapons and homes to horses, with several pieces of colour art, if you can find the right version of the book.

Some basic designs for horse decoration include hand prints, zig zag lightning bolts, groups of random dots and circles around the horses eyes. Colours for any of the above, red, yellow, white.
These are all from memory and I can't remember where the references came from or what they mean.

thanks again kelsard.

The first cover is the one I have, the second one is the newest one of which I'm aware.  Both have the colour art.  Price is all over the price, I know, but it's worth a decent investment for over 1000 illustrations in more than 600 pages.

Foundry have a guide to the plains Indians - or had, as their online library is undergoing reconstruction. It may be worth keeping an eye on their site:

Aha! I've just found the article as a html file I saved on one of my back-up cd's  ;D

If you want it, pm me with your e-mail address & I'll try and get it to you.
