What's a maximum figure count that can realistically be used

Question is in the title. I have a bad habit of going overboard on figures and bloating beyond what a system will gracefully handle. So, I'm curious how well the system works at 20, or 30, or 40 figures on a side.

The only issue with going that high is time, as each figure gets to act individually in each of the three phases (movement, shooting & fighting).
There again, I have seen some players who group figures together to speed up activations...
