Moiterei's mad dash into 20mm WW2 [Update 18/02/2022]
« on: March 24, 2021, 09:19:17 AM »
Hi chaps and chapesses,
due to real lifetm I haven't been very active on this forum of late. Something I aim at changing again.
Anyway, as the title suggests I've been lured into the the warm embrace of 20mm miniatures for my WW2 gaming. As of yet I'm still beavering away on my first force for Chain of Command but thought the one or other might be interested in my progress.
So here we go!

First off the starting block the basic rifle platoon as outlined in the CoC handbook:

Some close ups:

I had these sitting in my drawer of shametm for waaaaay to long but once I had finally talked myself into giving it a go I couldn't stop. Those [urlhttps://abfigures.com]AB Figures[/url] sculpted by the fantastic Tony Barton were a real revelation. Not only are there myriads of different poses available, but they almost painted themselves. Contrary to my usual approach with 28mm figures I restricted myself to a rather more traditional Foundry triad style of painting. Only the skin got a little more attention. This also helped to reduce the time required to paint these little fellows.
So it wasn't long till I came along with some reinforcements:

First off a support squad of riflemen

Followed by a 45mm AT gun by Zvezda with both AB and Zvezda crew. Both makes work together surprisingly well

A Political Commissar who'll also pull double duty as another Senior Leader if required

A Forward Observation Officer (FOO) together with his radio man. I very much doubt a Soviet FOO for a 80mm mortar battery had a wireless set but I think it looks cool, so who cares?

Next in line is a PTRD AT rifle, pretty useless against the big cats but should be good enough to deal with lighter armoured recce vehicles and soft skins

Followed up by a Maxim MMG. A sturdy little piece of kit and just the ticket if you need the Germans to keep their bloody heads down

And also crew for a ZIS-3 AT gun I have yet to fully paint

Just as beautiful as your 28mm figures  :-*

Now tell me, which do you prefer painting, 20mm or 28mm? :)

Wow, these are sublime, possibly the best 20mm figures I have seen, and I’ve seen a few.

Absolutely magnificent paint jobs on these ABs. Agree with GunnerD, these are some of, if not the, best 20mm paint jobs I've ever seen; and the great basing adds to their overall appeal (46 years of gaming so I have seen more than a couple of painted and based figs). Looking forward to what comes next.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 20mm WWII.
You do know that 20mm is "the scale for WWII?"

Lovely painting as always, I think the 'triad style' works fine on these little chaps - those AB minis are gorgeous :)

@all: Thank you very much!  8)
@TacticalPainter: Thanks! I like it here  :D
@Captain Blood: Well, at the moment definitely 20mm... We'll see how long that enthusiasm holds ;)

OK, not much to show today but a ZIS-3 with crew and a Soviet medic team. Gun and medics are Zvezda while crew for the gun is AB miniatures.

Stunning work, and as someone who has their first 20mm stuff on order, truly inspirational. Looking forward to seeing more
