1st South Carolina (Union)

Came across an interesting passage while reading about this early black regiment:

'"The first suits worn by the boys were red coats and pants, which they disliked very much, for they said, 'The rebels see us, miles away.'"
Reminiscences of my Life in Camp, Susie King Taylor (a fascinating charcter in her own right)

Has anyone ever seen a depiction of this uniform? I can't find one. I'm quite familiar with the hated red pants (as seen worn by the 2nd South Carolina in the film 'Glory'), but I haven't been able to find a picture of these red coats. Has anybody else? What form of coat were they, I wonder? if someone has this info to hand I'd be very grateful. I'm currently pondering what I am calling a micro-project (I don't really do full-blown wargaming projects any more) where I paint a few interesting individuals from the Civil War, and if I can find out what they looked like, one of these guys sounds like a perfect candidate for it.

Never heard of it before... if you look for pictures on Google (1st south carolina volunteer infantry regiment -colored), it shows troops in red troussers and dark blue frockcoat...

Indeed. Some nice images out of there of that uniform. I may well go with that if I fail to discover anything about the coat mentioned by Susie King Taylor, because it is quite a pleasing outfit to the eye, which I think I'd like to paint.

Now that I've seen hese, might have to paint up a unit of them just because.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
