German Invasion 1875: UD 21/5 Even More of a Terrain update

Project Log

P.2 Sculpts/conversions of Rifle Volunteers (wip)
P.3 Draft unit rosters (for Rebels & Patriots)
P.3 British Home Service Helmet, 1878 Pattern (discussion)
P.3 Masters of 6 x Rifle Volunteers
P.4 Prelude to Dorking Info
P.5 Terrain plans

I regularly say that I wonít be starting new projects and then I do  ::). But this one isnít entirely new as it will (mostly) redeploy terrain from my Gothic Horror and ECW projects. Also, for the bigger games the heavy lifting will be shared with others.

Btw, I pondered where to place this project as itís not Victorian Science Fiction but Victorian Military Fiction (steam tanks etc arenít my thing  :o). But itís here as here is where most of the British Home Service troops seem to hang out.  ;)

So, itís 1875 and the German Invaders have landed near Worthing, advancing north through Horsham to what could be a decisive battle near Dorking. Meanwhile thereís been a feint landing at Harwich and an attempt will be made to seize the Woolwich Arsenal. So far, so ďReminisces of a VolunteerĒ.  8)

This side project follows a separate landing, by a Bavarian Corps, on the north of bank of the Thames. The plan being to seize intact the London docks while taking out the Artillery ranges at Shoeburyness and the fort at Tilbury. Thus a role for my Whitechapel and rural Essex terrain.

The terrain has threads of its own, but here are a few tasters, some unpainted:

My starting forces comprise:

GERMAN
The Bavarian infantry by Eagles of Empire, plus a Krupp gun from Outpost.

BRITISH
The plastic Perry Zulu British Line Infantry in Home Service Helmets, various armed civilians for a resistance, and Iím having a go at creating Rifle Volunteers by combining/converting plastic Perry Sudan British and Nappy British, plus a 3 pounder manned by Artillery Volunteers.

There is much to do!

More to follow soon.

Rules will be Rebels and Patriots, with the starting rosters already drawn up.

The mid-point in creating the first of the Rifle Volunteers.

These are based on the 7th Tower Hamlets Rifle Volunteer Corps.

Extraneous equipment and uniform detail was shaved from the Sudan Line Infantry bodies, with the arms (including Austrian Knots to the cuffs) glued into place. Snider-Enfield Rifles were converted from Nappy Brown Bess muskets, which then replaced the Sudan Martini-Henries. The Sudan heads were then fitted with the Nappy Light infantry Shakos, which were shortened and reshaped.  The kneeling legs were taken from a Perry ACW confederate set.

Edit: theyíve also been rebased onto something thinner and flatter than the integral Sudan bases

All thatís left to do is add the GS.

And this is the uniform Iím aiming for, some of which is conjecture:

Likewise will follow this closely.

I have Guards, Line and Scots in Slade Wallace eqt converted for Home Service and had thought to use the Perry Intervention Force Canadian Militia as Volunteers.

Stunning terrain!! :o

Thanks folks

... had thought to use the Perry Intervention Force Canadian Militia as Volunteers.

Yes, that is a great idea. The real kicker for me though is that to some extent my East London and Essex terrain are connected to my family roots so I want to do as good a job as possible - recognising that there is very limited information - in creating specific Volunteer Units from the areas to which I have a family connection.

Thus the 7th Tower Hamlets etc

You certainly aren't put off by a challenge, are you? I'm fascinated to see where you take this. Excellent start though.

Interesting alternate history stuff, nice setup.

Good work on your Volunteer conversions.

Ironclad Miniatures do wonderful British infantry in home service helmets and Grenadier Guards in mighty bearskin caps for this period and some cool looking Prussian infantry.

Iíd put this in the Age of Big Battalions but clearly state alternate history in the topics.

Carry on!

I like it...

Have considered something similar, but set in the year 1901.  Have you heard of the novel '1901' by Robert Conroy.  It is an alternate history novel, but as wiki states:

Quote
The plot is based on an actual diplomatic crisis that nearly brought the United States and the German Empire into war during the early 20th century. Conroy was inspired by the publication of the actual German invasion plans.

You were very easy to persuade  ;D

Iíve already got two, 24 man battalions of regular Brits and some terrain started but Iíll do my own thread towards the end of the month.

Iíll be using Perryís BIF mainly, without any conversion work as I donít mind some historical inaccuracies  :)

Yes, after reflection I also concur with Captain Darling.

I hadnít heard of it but have now read the Wiki entry. In some ways the alternate history reminded me of the non sci-fi bits of The Man In The High Castle. Very interesting.
