They work well  8)

Couple of different jacket colours would do for different regiments as well?

Actually if you ignore the ursupers now on the English throne, the recent Bavarian Duke Franz is the true heir of the Stuarts, due to a marriage in the 19th century. Therefore if Bavarians invade England its only for the rightful king!  lol

lol I fear it will be the British who are being bashed.

Anyone familiar with the story of the Battle of Dorking will know that it does not end well for our enthusiastic amateurs.  :'(

Pretty much yes. Though ĎRegimentsí is overstating the size of the units (called Corps), which might vary from 50 to I think 1,000.

At this point in time uniforms were the choice of the Rifle Volunteer unit and many were influenced by European Jaegers so grey and green were very popular. Different facings and lace might differentiate but headgear also varied, with some wearing a kepi, some the Kilmarnock cap, some the shako and others the light infantry busby. The major problem is in identifying which units wore what and when, as records are limited. The War Department considered the Volunteers to be enthusiastic but amateurish civilians (which they were) so didnít keep much in the way of records. That said Iíve got enough info to differentiate between a number of East London and City Units.

Steve,

If you haven't already got a copy then this book has quite a good range of images for the period you are looking for.

Thanks all  :D

 lol

Victorian Dads Army pretty much sums it up.

Youíre going to wince Dirk but at the moment the German Force is all Bavarian  :o
I love Bavaria but then Iím from Essex  ;)

I expect Iím going to expand my Germans to also include Prussians at some point BUT for big games like Dorking, Herr Malamute is accumulating an army of solid, efficient, Prussian goodness.  8)

Dirk Iím not sure what you were trying to say? Was it beer oíclock (Bier Zeit) when you posted?  :D

Gary and Ewan - thanks so much for the book recommendations. I will certainly be following those up. Iíve got a fair amount of info on some Volunteer Corps but - fastidious pedant that I can sometimes be  ;) - I really wanted to include units from where I have a personal connection as they might have been at a specific time point; I guess Iíll do the best research I can and then compromise . Tracking down some of these specifics can be difficult if not impossible.  A later addition to the project will be mounted Volunteers - Essex didnít have any and itís Yoemanry wasnít highly rated at the time - but Iíll perhaps put together something representative of a Yorkshire unit.  :D

I had a research jaunt taking in Dorking, Worthing and that which lies between. In case of interest, hereís an image of an info sheet that summarises my findings though as it is compressed by the website coding, Iíve also attached it as a pdf.   :)

Thanks chaps. Itís a lot of fun trying to get into the nitty gritty of detail that Chesney left out of his story. At the moment Iím also reading the reactionary follow-up (a much more jingoistic story by Stone) that has the Germans defeated at Tunbridge Wells.

As far as any campaign goes, thereís the Dorking related games Iíll play with Oshiro, Malamute et al, plus solo stuff. Iíll also be running an adjunct that sees the Germans send a second force down the Thames to isolate and then capture the London docks, the Tower of London, the Woolwich Arsenal and The City. All of that isnít in Chesneyís book and though he mentions the capture of the Woolwich Arsenal he doesnít say how it was done.
