Alright, I am going to make a bog - I have an awful idea for a game, so I am going to make a section of terrain that matches my various desert and post apoc terrain, and then some bits and bobs to add to it.

A bog eh?

That doesn't sound too competitive. Then again, so didn't a certain conservatory...  ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Honestly, I am not expecting much out of this one.  It is more that I need to do it, not that I feel I need to make too much of a bang.  It'll be big - my boards are always 2' x 4' - but I will be trying to add some bits and such up on top of them as well.

The big issue I have is that I have to do the painting as I go, because I am planning on pouring the water after painting.

We'll see how it turns out.

So, the beginning was done by paintingthe first colors on, and leaving the "bog" sections unpainted, as I have found that spray paints will effectively melt the pink foam and leave me an uneven pattern, that gives me a beginning of texture for the terrain.

You MUST do a step like this outside, or it will make you very ill.  The fumes are not healthy.  I used a brown paint that I had, so that I will not need to do more to paint it.

And now that it has mostly dried, I am adding a bit of texture to the whole thing by using spray adhesive and some stale excess baking soda.

The texture made by the spray paint is fabulous.

BTW, I think I will be approaching this contest with a similar project. :D

Good start. I really like the textures that you are achieving.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Unfortunately, I think I have to not post anything past this until all is done - because I have to paint the entirety before I add the vegetation and pour the water...

Am sure it will look stunning when it’s done, we will all just have to be patient in the meantime  :D

Looking good so far(and you haven't even added the water of veg yet!) Any chance of some closer shots of your texture? I thought baking soda would have been too fine. All I've ever used for basing is sand and gravel. I know this is out of scale, so I'm curious to see if I'll need to steal your idea for future projects. ;)

It didn't work - it was so fine that it was barely noticeable, so I actually went and got spray texture, and added that last night.  Also, when I started to add paint with my airbrush, the baking soda melted into the paint.  I had gotten a 5# bag for free from a friend, so it was worth the experiment.

Your efforts are certainly appreciated. There is a lot to learn from failed attempts.

I’ve used fleckstone spray paint on pink insulation boards with none of the burning from other spray paint. Something to do with the different propellant used.  It’s an easy way to get add some textures quickly.

There certainly is.  As a friend once stated after drinking a bit - "Experience comes from bad decisions. Good decisions come from experience!"
