Very interesting and informative! The bits about tarry tendril monsters was suggestive of one of the acts in Diablo 2, although that featured flaming tendrils...

This is very realistic looking and cleverly made terrain so far Clach Umha, and I love the sweeping fluidity of your tar demon. I am very keen to see the final version!

I like the way that the WIP threads for this competition often give you an interesting insight into the creator's though process; not just the techniques they use but their influences and their whole approach to the hobby.

No, I was not insinuating plagiarism. Scenes from Diablo 2 (an old PC fantasy game) came to mind. That is all.

With some searching about, I remembered that it was the "River of Flame" from "diablo 2 act 4," for example as described here (this site would seem to include a lot of images and some video content, etc., so may be slow to load):
