GaleForce9 Aliens board game: the hardware
« on: April 12, 2021, 06:27:49 AM »
Recently GaleForceNine released their board game based on the 1986 Aliens movie, one of my favorites. Apart from a lot of high-quality cardboard the game has some of the best Aliens miniatures I have seen so far.

Made from hard plastic they do need some (and quite some in some cases) assembly, so model kit building experience is a pre.

Your painting looks great as usual!
I have the same miniatures and will eventually get to them. However, do you notice that while the alien warrior sculpts are super detailed, especially for their size, the alien queen is somewhat lacking in sculpted detail? Parts of the queen just seem "flat", compared to the warriors where every bit is covered in tiny raised detail.

The sculpts of the Marines are not as crisp looking as I would have hoped but you have done a brilliant job with them. You made the Queen look better than I have been led to believe its sculpt would allow. I keep hearing the warriors are much better than the Queen.

Nice! So far I've just painted Newt and one alien, I pushed them to the front of the painting queue just to see how they came out. Both were fun to paint, and I was pretty pleased with Newt, considering the human figures aren't that crisp, as Rick W put it.

But with only two figures from the whole set  painted, I had a realization:

"Uh oh,  I made a clean spot here. Now I've done it. Guess I'll have to do the whole thing." :)

 lol

With regards to opinions that the Queen miniature was less detailed than the warriors I must say I didn't notice it at first. Of course this could be attributed to the fact that the miniature is simply three times as big. I posted pictures below of the Prodos Queen (left) and the GF9 Queen (right).

There is indeed a small degree of difference in sharpness in the GF9 figure. However, given that the Prodos Queen is a resin model and the GF9 is hard plastic, I think GF9 did a fine job.

Painting her (and the warriors) like I did is extremely simple. They were primed matt black, then highlighted with ModelColor Oily Steel and again a bit with Chainmail silver. And that's all.
