Victorian Dinosaur Hunt
« on: April 09, 2021, 12:03:22 PM »
I'm looking for suggestions for rulesets for a Victorian dinosaur hunt.  I'm looking for more of a skirmish game rather than roleplaying.  I like the idea of a Lost World/The Land That Time Forgot type of a dinosaur safari.

I've come across Space 1889, Gaslight, and In Her Majesty's Name.  Does anyone know if any of these have rules/stats specifically for dinosaurs?

Any other rulesets out there that would be good?

I'm wanting to set this up to play with the kids also.  I may end up making a ruleset myself but a jumping off point would be helpful.

Thank you!

I’ve not got them or read them but isn’t there a part in Death on the dark continent  where there’s a big game hunt ?

"Tooth and Claw" by Chris Peers. These rules were written specifically hunting dinosaurs and pre-historic animals.

Tusk by Irregular are considered to be good rules.

Voyages Extraordinaires by Wessex Games would fit the bill.

I've used Fistful of Lead for a Jurassic Park convention game, they worked really well for that.

Use X-Wing movement rulers along with a card deck for the dinosaur movement to randomise it a bit, plus gave the dinosaurs traits, e.g the T-Rex was aggressive and charged anything that moved with 12" (bad eyesight so could only see moving figures), the raptors were fast and moved the long move rulers, the triceratops was slow (short rulers) but armoured.

FFoL can be adapted to pretty much anything if you're prepared to tinker.

Just to add to the thread of possible games, I found some free games on perilplanet.com, Big Game Hunter and Conquest of the Lost World.  The Big Game Hunter is a 2-page ruleset.  Good for a jumping off point!

Tusk by Irregular are considered to be good rules.

I thought that was for prehistoric hunters as well, but looking for the game book online I see the sub-title '12000BC to 1914AD'.
Still I think it IS for mammoth instead of dinosaurs hunters.

Grain of salt time: I've played, long ago, at a con, but never owned nor fully read the rules.

Not played, but in my reference library:

Tusk does have some dinos included

Dinomight by Magister Militum has quite a few dinos.

Both look to be entertaining games.

How about 'Adventures in the Lost Lands'?

Quote
Adventures in the Lost Lands is a tabletop miniature wargame based on the Two-Hour Wargames' Chain Reaction system. It provides rules for gaming with dinosaurs, mammalian mega-fauna, and other prehistoric creatures in a variety of eras and settings.
From the website:

Adventures in the Lost Lands introduces you to a world like no other, a world of giant creatures and prehistoric men where you can:

-Be a Pulp Era hero exploring lost lands and searching for valuable treasure
-Lead your tribe of primitive cavemen in a fight against other primitive tribes
-Be a modern-day big game hunter who travels to a prehistoric land that Time forgot
-Command a Victorian-era expedition bent on discovery and conquest
-Be a dinosaur (not only a dinosaur, but THE dinosaur), as you take on all others for supremacy
-Or maybe command a squad of WW 2 GIs hurled into a strange prehistoric world while on maneuvers in Louisiana (it's a long story....)

In Adventures in the Lost Lands, you can do all of this and more. We've included a number of linked scenarios forming a campaign that can be played solo, cooperatively with all players on the same side, or head-to-head against your friends. It's all up to you!

Adventures in the Lost Lands is a stand-alone game that can also be used with Larger Than Life and other Two-Hour Wargames rules.

You could always use planet 28 with the Death machines expansion - the rules for vehicles could be used to represent larger dinosaurs and beasts whilst regular characters could play the role of the hunters :)
