The Woman-King

Just saw this film  (pretty good!) and now i have hankering to paint up some Dahomey Amazons in 28mm and probably the musket armed  male soldiers as well as some of the rival empire (Oyo… Oto?) and some civilians.  1826 Benin strikes me as an interesting setting for Silver Bayonet/Sharp Practice scenarios.  Anyone make these figs?

Your best bets would probably be the Dahomey ranges from Gringo 40s and Dixon (don't ask me how they match up, probably poorly in terms of height)  and/or the Castaway Arts Ashanti wars range.

The Dixon and Gringo 40s ranges specifically cover female warriors.  The Castaway Arts range should give you reasonably generic West African musket armed males. For anything else, you might look at what's available in the old Foundry range.

The Gringo's are lovely but there are iirc only 4 miniatures and they are all armed with lever action repeater rifles which isn't very 1820s. The Dixon range is bigger, and sculpted by Mike Owen of Artizan fame, they have  male and females with muskets but they are an old range and quite small even compared to Foundry's darkest Africa range. Dixon are probably your best bet maybe mixed in with some Foundry Askaris.

Thanks, maybe someone should point Bad Squiddo to these Amazons.

In general I have had some real problems finding Regency period females and civilians.

Jane Austen's novels are full of them.  ;)

The old Front Rank range (now owned by GB) has a very nice, albeit small, selection.

And if you aren't especially fussed about fashion details, both armed and unarmed types can be found in the Empress maori Wars range.

I have the Dixon FFL supposed to fight the amazons. These are very nice sculpts, early work of Marc Copplestone I am not mistaken. These are quite small in comparison with modern ranges so I guess Gringo or Front Rank would not be the best match. Wargames Foundry Perry sculpts would probably be a better option.
