Superspeedpaint project. Airfix etc are disliked by many gamers I know. For a simple 1hrwargames demo game I speedpainted a portable 1/72 army. Bigbases. And believe me, it looks good (enough),

Airfix are disliked basically, because they're crap compared to everything you can glean today for the same price.
But some of us 'old grumblers' can recall the days when it was Airfix or nothing.

Remember the airfix magazine guide to American union infantry as napoleonic prussians.

Also if recreating the past, need to find humbrol gloss paint for them.

Happy days.

Absolutely, although some heathens today cheat, trying to hide a matt acrylic with gloss varnish. Sacrilege.

That'll be me then, proper Airfix based for, and fighting the equally daft OHW rules!

Seeing that picture, reminded on how thin the WW2 figures were compared with their WW1 range.

As well as the old airfix and humbrol paints. We had the polyurethane glue that came in white tin tubes. You had to cut the top off to use them, then find a large enough pin to stick in the end so that glue didn’t dry up.

When using said glue it was always stringy and impossible just to get a small amount onto your model. Many a vehicle left with a gluey fingerprint.

I wrecked more Airfix models with this stuff than I ever did with a pellet gun!

How did you find the OHW rules, most love 'em or loath 'em!

If I remember correctly, wasn’t it called cement glue back in 60’s early 70’s.
Used to get my stuff from Woolworths back then. RIP.

I enjoy the OHW rules. I mean, they are what they are and they don't pretend to be an accurate depiction of a particular period. They provide a fun game in a quick amount of time in a small space. I've used them in my classroom and the kids pick up the rules quickly.

The scenarios are great and I've used them with a variety of rule sets.

Softplastic. Yes. Some sculpts are bad (Romans). Others excellent (Prussian Landwehr) Modern 1/72 is often good, and has better proportions than 28mm 'heroic' fatboys. 1/72 vehicles are great.
I see the weaknesses of the scale (I prefer 15mm these days). It's not as good as I thought when I was 15, but not as bad as some think it is. A buddy of mine still paints 1/72, and figures are fantastic.

Here's my review:

Must say: it depends. The game that I played against that newbie was nice. A later Napoleonic game against a seasoned wargamer was a disappointment. Scenario too simple. No challenge.

The base looks great!

I really like 1/72 (mixed with early Ral Partha 25s where possible). It's particularly well suited to 'element' bases given the dynamic poses that manufacturers tend to go for.
