And I hate to break it to you, but your pet coral snake has escaped apparently...

Haha, good eyes... that's a stick I found several years ago on a camping trip, that I painted in a 'folk art' style :)

This build is definitely in the 'ugly as hell' stage. I need to wait for the spray foam to cure so I can trim it up. After a layer of paper tissue to unite it, and texturing, it should be along the lines of what I'm envisioning.

a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

Looks very promising I think! Certainly way more dramatic than my take on the same scenario,

Damn fine work.  I’ve never used spray foam. Was it hard to work with?

I wouldn't say it is hard to use; it expands quick, and then slowly continues to expand- so it does tend to project beyond what you want to actually fill. It is very easy to cut and shape though, so that may be an advantage.

These are probably the last two pics before the real painting starts.

To tie things together and start introducing texture, I used my tried-and-true method of utilizing toilet paper and Mod-Podge or acrylic polymer medium. I added gray paint and some sand to the mix to be able to tell where I'd been easily. A little over a year ago, using TP would have been like covering a piece in gold leaf  lol

After this I added some rocks and sand to the nooks and crannies.

Next, I'll use the airbrush to darken everything and to get in the crevices, then on to the real painting.

That is an excellent way to unify and blend all the textures and levels. This will be one dangerous set of stairs.

Good grief, you'd need a risk assessment to climb up that!  :D
