WWII Italian Figures
« on: December 01, 2023, 03:28:21 PM »
A mix of Empress and Warlord Games for a customer: the heavier weapons are Empress, the Arditi and San Marco Naval Infantry are WG.

Curiously he wanted them as painted by the WG Studio in tropical colors, but the figures clearly have a turtleneck sweater, that was used only in Europe.

Those ones excellently painted in Kaki are really lovely and, in my option, more iconic than to have them painted in grey-green.
I may add that It’s understandable to prefer to have  them painted in tropical dress because the only well known action and true moment of glory of the san marco marines  of the Royal Army was during the failed attempt by British forces to conquer, trough a combined big raid, the port of Tobruk (Operation Daffodill, September 1942) in which even if betrayed and surprised by enemies disguised as German allies , and even if armed only  with their personal weapons ,they  cornered ,   kicked in the ass or captured the quasi totality of  Allied superior forces including the elite SAS or LRDG  troops that had even executed, during the night,  at  cold blood some  surrendering Italian carabinieri  guards. The British official history , as usual  when Italian soldiers should be represented  , avoided to praise or even mention the San Marco and instead told  only about German defenders which is untrue as the only ground  German units  in Tobruk were  few FLAK or medical  ones.
On the other hand even some grey green clad San Marco Marines could find a place in some historical scenarios , but  only during the RSI period  when they faced partisans and Brazilian/US forces in the mountain ranges of central Italy together with German Mountain troops ..even in that case they were successful during probably the last offensive carried out in the west by Axis forces (Operation Wintergewitter, December 1944)

They look great, how do the Warlord and Empress compare in size?

They can easily go together. As a matter of fact I did not realize the heavier weapons were Empress until I started searching around for the assembly instructions of the howitzers: they come in a plastic bag with zero instructions (and there are none online either, so they were a royal pain in the arse)

I can't stand assembling heavy weapons. I've never had any luck with them even with instructions.
